Riot's table carries a warning. Riot has flagged its VALORANT code list as out of date, because a bug is making some VALORANT errors show up wrong. If the steps here don't match what you're seeing, Riot suggests a support ticket.

Is it you or Riot? If a lot of players got the same code at once, it's likely the servers. Check Riot's service status page for VALORANT before you start reinstalling things.

Riot's VALORANT table doesn't give VAL 9 a line of its own. It sits inside a block of codes from 8 to 21 that Riot labels as Riot Client problems, all with the same advice: restart the Riot Client. So VAL 9 tells you where the fault is (the launcher, not VALORANT or Vanguard), without saying exactly what went wrong.

Restart it properly

Closing the client window doesn't close the client. It keeps running in the system tray, which is why a quick close-and-reopen often changes nothing. Right-click the tray icon and choose Exit, or end RiotClientServices.exe in Task Manager if the icon's missing. Then start it fresh.

If VAL 9 comes straight back after a real restart, check Riot's status page for a client outage, then send Riot a ticket. Riot itself flags this table as out of date at the moment, which is one more reason to let support see the error if the simple fix fails.

Riot's fix, in Riot's order

  1. Restart the Riot Client

    Close VALORANT, right-click the Riot Client's tray icon and pick Exit. If you can't find the icon, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and end RiotClientServices.exe. Start the client again and press Play.

  2. Send Riot a support ticket

    If the steps above don't clear it, open a ticket with Riot Player Support from the VALORANT support site and include the exact code you saw. Riot can see account-side problems that you can't.
