What's happening when the box appears

This one shows up during a game, not in the client. The match keeps going on Riot's server while your PC falls behind, and the box stays up as the game tries to pull in everything it missed. That's why things look so strange for a few seconds: your champion can freeze in place, or keep walking while the rest of the map stands still.

Is it everyone, or just you?

Riot's first step is ruling out a server-wide problem, so check League server status. It's also worth asking your internet provider whether there's a wider outage where you live.

Test your fixes in a custom game. Dropping out of a real match costs you, and a custom lets you see whether the connection holds without an AFK penalty. On NA, EUW and EUNE, Riot's Lag Report (still labeled a beta) measures the route from your provider to League's servers before you queue.

How to fix it

Riot lists these roughly from easiest to rarest.

1. Go wired. Riot calls a LAN cable the best single improvement if you're on Wi-Fi, with less packet loss as the payoff.
2. Close whatever's eating bandwidth. Video and music streams and a lot of voice chat apps add load, and it gets worse on a network other people are using at the same time.
3. Turn the firewall off for a test. A third-party firewall has to be switched off in its own settings. For Windows Firewall, go to Control Panel, System and Security, Windows Firewall, and choose to turn it off for each network location. Turn it back on once you know the answer.
4. Switch to a public DNS. Riot's PC connection guide covers the adapter settings.
5. Look at the router. Unplug it, wait fifteen seconds and plug it back in. Riot also suggests turning on QoS, and forwarding League's ports by hand as a final resort (it should happen on its own).

Nothing helped? Send Riot a ticket and attach the logs its Riot Repair Tool collects. Riot says that speeds things up.
