Two errors with nearly the same name

League has two login errors that read almost alike, and Riot gives them different causes. This one, the plain Unexpected Login Error, is about your connection. Riot's error table says it usually means an unstable internet link, and that it can block updates as well as the login.

The other one's message talks about the login session. That's a stuck copy of the client running in the background, with a Task Manager fix. If your message mentions a session, go to that page instead.

How to fix it

1. Reset the router. Unplug it, give it about 15 seconds, and plug it back in (that's the wait Riot suggests in its reconnect guide).
2. Change your DNS. Point your network adapter at a public DNS server instead of your provider's. Riot's PC connection guide has the steps.
3. Call your ISP. If neither helps, Riot's advice is to contact your internet provider and tell them what's happening.

Riot's general login guide adds two quick checks worth doing first. Make sure the client is set to the region your account actually lives in (each account belongs to a single region at a time), and make sure your Windows clock is synced, because a clock that's out of step breaks the security certificates the login relies on.
