How to Beat Riven
Riven's damage arrives in one uninterrupted block, and then it's gone. Almost everything about beating her is knowing which of those two states she's in.
She's the closest thing the top lane has to a pure mechanics champion, so the matchup feels wildly different depending on who's playing her (a one-trick and a first-timer are two separate lanes). What doesn't change is the shape: she has a sequence, the sequence is finite, and when it's finished she has to stand there and wait. Beating her means surviving a few seconds of her and then taking the rest of the minute.
- Enough early health to be alive at the end of her combo rather than during it
- Damage that doesn't depend on her standing still, since she never does
- A reason to be in lane at all, because she wins the game she wants if you hide

Riven Overview
Strengths: What Makes Her Dangerous
- She's scary at level three and she never stops being scary. No item spike to play around, no window where she becomes a threat, so she's one of the hardest laners to plan against.
- She can leave any fight. Committing against her is a decision she gets to reject, and half the deaths she causes are people chasing a champion who was always going to get away.
- Her mobility and her damage are the same buttons. Every step forward is also a hit, so backing off doesn't buy the reprieve it does against other bruisers.
- She turns a small lead into a large one faster than almost anyone. One won trade puts you in range of the next one, and the third is a kill.
- The skill ceiling is real. Against a good one, "she has no cooldowns left" is a much shorter window than it looks on paper.
Weaknesses: Where You Get In
- Her burst has a floor and a ceiling. It's a fixed sequence of a fixed length, and when it's over she has to wait (that wait is your window).
- She has no way to heal a bad lane. Health she loses at three minutes is still missing at eight unless she goes home, and going home costs her the wave.
- She has to walk into you. Every point of damage in her kit is short-ranged, and a lane that makes walking up expensive takes her whole game away.
- Her strongest version of the game is early. Against a real scaling carry, the Riven who didn't win lane is playing a losing game from twenty minutes onward.
- Committing everything to reach you leaves her with nothing to leave with. Punish the exit.
Countering Riven
Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Riven comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:
- Count the sequence, then fight. Take the burst, survive it, and start your own trade at the point where she has nothing to answer with.
- Buy health before you buy armor. Being alive at the end of three seconds is worth more than taking slightly less damage during them, and early health does that better than early resistances.
- Punish her for leaving. A Riven who has spent everything to reach you has also spent what she was going to escape with.
- Deny the walk-up. Freeze, push, or simply stand where a step forward costs her, because a lane she can't enter is a lane she can't win.
If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:
Playing a Bad Riven Matchup
Take the wave under your turret and mean it. She's a much worse champion when the fight has to happen somewhere she can be punished for standing, and she gets very little out of a lane she can't dive.
Assume every trade she starts is her best one. She doesn't open with a probe, so treat the first contact as the whole engagement rather than as something you can escalate out of.
Bring the jungler early or don't bring them at all. Her mobility makes her one of the hardest champions on the map to gank once she has an escape available, so the ganks that work are the ones before she's had a reason to hold it.
Best Riven Counters
Three ways to beat a burst duelist: outlast the burst, win before it exists, or make her pay for walking up. One counter each.
Garen Outlasts The Burst
He's the standard answer and he has been for years. His damage doesn't require her to hold still, he heals back what the combo took the moment she runs out of it, and Decisive Strike [Q] is one of the only silences left in the game (a serious problem for a champion whose defense is a button).
Granted, he doesn't win it for free. A Riven who refuses to commit and simply farms is one Garen can't do much about either.
Renekton Wins Before She Exists
The other short-cooldown bully in the lane, and the one who gets there first. He beats her in the levels where neither of them has items, and a Riven who lost the first four minutes has no way to buy the health back.
Convert it or lose it. He has no late game to fall back on, so the lead has to become a turret rather than a kill count.
Teemo Makes Walking Up Expensive
Range plus a blind is a miserable combination for someone whose damage is stitched together out of basic attacks. Every walk-up costs her health she can't get back (nothing in her kit heals it), and the trade she planned lands at a fraction of its value.
Understand what you're signing up for. Get caught with nothing available and the lane ends instantly, so this is a matchup about spacing rather than about being safe.
Itemizing Against Riven
Buy for those three seconds. The item that matters is the one that means you're still standing when her sequence runs out:
Plated Steelcaps is the early buy because a large share of her damage comes through basic attacks. Bramble Vest is aimed at her build rather than her kit (the sustain she fights extended trades with comes from her items). Randuin's Omen makes the chase after a trade you walked away from a lot less certain. The Control Ward is part of the matchup too, because a Riven who knows where your jungler is plays the lane completely differently.
