How to Beat Ambessa

Matchup Guide · Evergreen · 3 Counter Picks

Every ability Ambessa casts ends with a dash, so by the time you've reacted to one she's already standing somewhere else.

She's miserable in lane because she never has to walk up to you. Each spell buys her a short hop (175 to 350 units) and an empowered attack on top, and she chains them until you've got nowhere left to back off to. When she's finally low, her ultimate grabs the farthest champion in a long line and heals her off the damage. What she can't do is change what kind of damage she deals. All of it is physical, and the champions who beat her are the ones built to shrug that off or punish it. Before you spend a ban on her, see where she lands on our solo queue tier list this patch.

Ambessa Overview

Strengths: What Makes Her Dangerous

  • She's always moving. Drakehound's Step [Passive] lets her dash after each ability, and every cast also stores an empowered attack with extra range and attack speed.
  • Her ultimate picks its own target. Public Execution [R] reaches 1250 units, blinks her behind the farthest enemy champion in the line and suppresses them (for 0.75 seconds, then a short stun on landing).
  • She heals off her spells. Public Execution [R] also carries a passive that returns part of the damage her abilities deal as health.
  • Her shield rewards you for hitting it. If Repudiation [W] absorbs champion damage while she braces, the slam that follows hits 50% harder.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • No magic damage at all. Armor answers her whole kit.
  • Her dashes stop when she's held down. Drakehound's Step [Passive] can't fire while she's immobilized or grounded, and a queued dash is lost if she gets rooted or stunned during the lockout.
  • She runs on energy. Each basic ability costs 70, and she gets it back by landing empowered attacks (40 to 70 energy apiece, depending on level). Stop the attacks and she runs dry.
  • The ultimate is slow to come back, 130 seconds at rank one.

Countering Ambessa

You only need one of these:

  • Cut her physical damage. Damage reduction, armor or a debuff that shrinks her attack damage all work, because there's nothing else in her kit to fall back on.
  • Stun her in the middle of the chain. She's committed to a dash the moment she casts, and crowd control during that lockout cancels it.

Already in the matchup without either? You can still hold lane.

Playing Into Ambessa Without a Counter

Trade when she's just spent a combo. Her empowered attacks are what refill her energy, so if you back off right after her spells land she comes away with less than she spent.

Don't stand in a straight line behind your minions when her ultimate is up. Public Execution [R] takes the farthest champion it passes, which is usually whoever thought they were safe at the back.

Best Ambessa Counters

Each of these beats her a different way. Pick the one you're most comfortable on.

Irelia champion icon

Irelia Tanks the Combo

Defiant Dance [W] cuts incoming physical damage by 40% to 70% while Irelia charges it (the number climbs with level), and the charge can't be interrupted. Every point of Ambessa's burst is physical. Save it for her all-in. Burning it on one poke wastes a cooldown that's 20 seconds at rank one.

Then turn it around. A stun from Flawless Duet [E] marks her, and Bladesurge [Q] into a marked target comes back almost instantly, so Irelia gets two dashes for one. Ambessa can't dash out while she's stunned.

Tryndamere champion icon

Tryndamere Won't Die to the Grab

Public Execution [R] is how Ambessa closes out a fight. Tryndamere's Undying Rage [R] stops his health from dropping below a floor for five seconds, and he can cast it even while he's suppressed, so the grab that finishes most top laners leaves him standing.

Mocking Shout [W] helps too. It strips up to 80 bonus attack damage from nearby champions for four seconds (at max rank), which lands hard on a champion whose kit scales almost entirely off it.

Illaoi champion icon

Illaoi Punishes the Dashes

Test of Spirit [E] pulls Ambessa's spirit out in front of Illaoi, and part of the damage dealt to the spirit carries through to her. If she dashes out of range or the spirit dies, she's marked as a Vessel and Tentacles keep spawning to hit her. For a champion who moves on every cast, that tether's hard to escape cleanly. Every Tentacle hit on a champion heals Illaoi (a share of her missing health), so the longer Ambessa stays and fights, the worse the trade gets for her.

Itemizing Against Ambessa

Plated Steelcaps Thornmail Executioner's Calling Death's Dance

Her healing comes off her ability damage, so Wounds matter here: Thornmail applies 40% when she attacks you, and Executioner's Calling does it from your own physical damage. Plated Steelcaps take 10% off her attacks (abilities are untouched, so they're the smallest piece here). Death's Dance spreads part of the damage you take over three seconds, which blunts a burst that's all supposed to land at once.
