How to Beat Tahm Kench

Matchup Guide · Evergreen · 3 Counter Picks

Tahm Kench swallows his marksman the moment you jump on them, and if you get too close to him, he swallows you instead.

He's the kind of support who makes every trade feel like a loss (your marksman won't enjoy it either). Damage you deal to him comes back (a lot of it is stored as grey health and healed off once he stops taking damage), his tongue slows you from a long way off, and three hits in a row turn his next lash into a stun. His ultimate is the worst part. It saves his carry from an all-in and it drags you out of your own team. What he can't do is stack you quickly from range. His stun and his Devour [R] both need three hits, and apart from his tongue, every one of those hits is a melee attack. If you're deciding whether he's worth a ban, check where he sits on our solo queue tier list this patch.

Tahm Kench Overview

Strengths: What Makes Him Dangerous

  • Devour [R] works on both teams. On an ally it makes them untargetable and shields them. On an enemy with three stacks it suppresses them and carries them away.
  • Your damage doesn't stick. Thick Skin [E] stores part of what he takes as grey health and heals part of it back once he's gone four seconds without taking damage.
  • His tongue is long. Tongue Lash [Q] slows the first enemy it hits, heals him if it's a champion, and stuns for 1.5 seconds once you've got three stacks.
  • He can arrive from a long way off. Abyssal Dive [W] sinks him into the water and brings him up somewhere else, knocking up everyone around the landing spot.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • His best tricks need three stacks. His stun and his enemy Devour [R] both need you to have taken three hits first, and he's melee.
  • The jump is telegraphed. His W is a channel of more than a second (you'll see the landing marker partway through), and a root, silence or grounding cancels it.
  • His ultimate can be blocked. A spell shield or crowd control immunity stops Devour [R] from pulling you in at all.
  • A passenger limits him. While he's got someone in his belly, his underwater jump is the only movement ability he can use.

Countering Tahm Kench

Any of these will do. You don't need all of them:

  • Don't let the stacks build. Stacks fade if he doesn't refresh them, so leave his range after two hits.
  • Carry an answer to Devour [R]. A spell shield, crowd control immunity, or anything that removes suppression.
  • Root him mid-jump. The channel before he surfaces is long, and a root, silence or grounding ends it.

Stuck in the matchup without one? It's still playable.

Playing Into Tahm Kench Without a Counter

Count his hits on you. At three stacks, his next Tongue Lash [Q] stuns and his ultimate is live, so the third auto is your cue to step back (the stacks drop off one at a time after a few seconds).

Don't commit your whole combo into his marksman while he's standing next to them. Tahm Kench will swallow them, and your cooldowns go into an untargetable target.

Poke him, then keep poking. Thick Skin [E] only heals once he's gone four seconds without damage, so steady chip damage stops it from paying out.

Best Tahm Kench Counters

All three are supports he struggles to lay a finger on, each for a different reason.

Rakan champion icon

Rakan Never Stands Still

Rakan's whole kit is movement (two dashes, and one of them can be recast for free). Battle Dance [E] flies him to an ally and shields them, and he can recast it for free, so he's in and out of a trade before Tahm Kench can land three hits on him. Grand Entrance [W] dashes in with a knock-up, and The Quickness [R] adds speed and charms everyone he runs through.

That matters because Tahm Kench's power is locked behind stacks. A Rakan who hits once, dances back to his marksman and comes in again later never gives him the three hits he needs.

Morgana champion icon

Morgana Shields the Target

Black Shield [E] grants crowd control immunity while it lasts and soaks magic damage (most of what Tahm Kench deals is magic). Devour [R] fails to pull anyone who's immune to crowd control, and the Tongue Lash [Q] stun bounces off too. Put it on whoever he's stacking (it's usually your marksman).

Dark Binding [Q] handles his engage. A root cancels his underwater jump while he's channeling, so a Tahm Kench who starts his jump where Morgana can see him never comes up.

Janna champion icon

Janna Keeps Him at Arm's Length

Tahm Kench has to be in melee range to stack you, and Janna is built to stop that. Howling Gale [Q] knocks him up, Zephyr [W] slows him for two seconds, and Monsoon [R] throws every enemy near her up to 875 units away. By the time he's walked back, the stacks he built are gone (and Monsoon [R] heals her team for as long as she channels it).

Itemizing Against Tahm Kench

Quicksilver Sash Morellonomicon Mortal Reminder Lord Dominik's Regards

Quicksilver Sash removes suppression, and if it's used while you're in his belly, you pop straight back out (Mercurial Scimitar's active does the same for an AD carry). Morellonomicon and Mortal Reminder both apply 40% Wounds, which cuts the healing he gets from Tongue Lash [Q] and from grey health. Lord Dominik's Regards deals up to 15% extra damage to targets with lots of bonus health, and his passive's bonus damage scales off that same stat.
