How to Beat Volibear

Matchup Guide · Evergreen · 3 Counter Picks

Volibear runs at you in a straight line and it works anyway. That's the part people can't get over.

He's about as honest as a champion gets. He walks forward, he gets faster the closer he is, he hits you, and he heals most of it back. There's no window where a clever dodge saves the trade and no piece of the kit that rewards outplaying it. What decides the matchup is arithmetic: how much of his healing you can take away, how long you can keep him from touching you, and whether you're still standing near a tower you think is protecting you at the moment his ultimate says otherwise.

Volibear Overview

Strengths: What Makes Him Dangerous

  • He takes your tower out of the conversation. Stormbringer [R] turns an all-in under your tower that shouldn't work into one that does, and it arrives at the exact level where most people start feeling safe again.
  • He closes the gap without a dash. Chasing is a stat for him rather than a cooldown, so backing away in a straight line just means dying slightly later.
  • He heals through your best trade. Winning a trade and watching most of the damage come back is what makes this lane feel unfair, and it's the reason people tilt into it.
  • He ramps. The longer a fight goes the harder he hits (the wrong direction for almost everyone standing in front of him).

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • The healing is a purchase away from being a non-issue. Anti-heal cuts the single mechanic the whole champion leans on, and it costs a fraction of what an item usually costs.
  • He has nothing at range. Not a poke, not a threat, not a way to contest a wave he isn't standing next to.
  • He has to arrive on the ground. Slows, roots and anything that keeps him at arm's length all attack the same single point of failure.
  • The dive telegraphs itself. He leaps from a distance you can see, and a target who has already stepped away from the tower turns the whole plan into a long walk home.
  • He's very ordinary at the start. The ramping needs time and the ultimate needs a level, and the first few minutes are the softest version of him you'll ever meet.

Countering Volibear

Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Volibear comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:

  • Buy anti-heal early. Well before three items. It's the cheapest way to turn a losing trade pattern into a winning one, and almost nobody does it soon enough.
  • Attack him from outside his range. Everything he owns needs contact, and a lane where contact never happens is a lane he loses without ever being outplayed.
  • Stop the arrival. A slow, a root, a ground, a knockback. Any of them, at the right second, costs him the entire engage.
  • Stop treating the tower as safety after level six. Standing under it against him is the most common way this matchup ends, and moving thirty units is the whole fix.

If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:

Playing a Bad Volibear Matchup

Trade in quick bursts and leave. The longer any exchange runs the more it favors him, so a good trade against him is one that ends before it becomes a fight.

Respect level six specifically. The danger jumps in a single step there, and the plate you were about to take is worth less than the death.

Keep the wave nearer your side than feels comfortable. He's a champion who has to walk, and every extra second of walking is a second your jungler could be doing something about him.

Best Volibear Counters

Refuse the contact, deny the leap, or make the healing stop mattering.

Teemo Blind Beats Attacking

A blind is a strange thing to build a matchup on until you notice that most of Volibear's damage comes from actually hitting somebody. Take that away at the moment he arrives and the fight he walked all that way for produces nothing.

Range does the rest, and the mushrooms make the walk itself expensive.

Poppy Denies The Arrival

She's built to stop champions from getting where they're going (a very specific answer to a champion whose entire threat is getting where he's going).

The leap is the clearest example. Being knocked away mid-leap cancels it outright, and a Volibear who spent the ultimate and arrived nowhere has handed you the next thirty seconds.

Jax champion icon

Jax Dodges The Bite

Volibear's healing runs through Frenzied Maul [W]: the first slash marks you and the second one bites and heals him. Counter Strike [E] dodges basic attacks for two seconds, the slash counts as one, and a dodged Maul never leaves the mark, so the heal never comes. Jax recasts it for the stun once Volibear has committed, and in a fight built on landing hits, two seconds of missing all of them is most of the trade.

Itemizing Against Volibear

Most of his damage is physical and the rest is the healing, so armor is only half the answer and the cheaper half is the anti-heal:

Bramble VestFrozen HeartRanduin's OmenPlated Steelcaps

Bramble Vest is the buy that changes the matchup, and it's worth getting far earlier than the rest of your build wants you to, because Grievous Wounds attacks the mechanic rather than the numbers. Ranged laners who don't want the armor can get the same effect from an Executioner's Calling instead. Frozen Heart is aimed squarely at the ramp (a champion who gets stronger the longer he swings is a bad champion to let swing quickly). Randuin's Omen covers the version of the fight where he's ahead and the hits are landing hard rather than often. Plated Steelcaps is the ordinary, boring, correct pair of boots against him and there's no clever alternative worth writing about.
