How to Beat Kayle

Matchup Guide · Evergreen · 3 Counter Picks

You can win lane against Kayle for fifteen minutes and still lose the game to her, because she was never trying to win lane.

That's what makes her so maddening. She's happy to farm under her tower while her passive hands her something new every few levels: range at 6, waves of fire at 11, even more range at 16. By then her attacks deal magic damage in an area and she can make herself invulnerable for two and a half seconds whenever the fight turns. She's weak on the way there (melee for the first five levels), and most of what she does runs through her basic attacks. Before you ban her, see where she sits on our solo queue tier list this patch.

Kayle Overview

Strengths: What Makes Her Dangerous

  • She keeps getting new tools. Divine Ascent [Passive] turns her ranged at level 6, adds a magic damage fire wave to her attacks at 11 and keeps her permanently at full attack speed stacks from 16.
  • Her ultimate cancels a fight. Divine Judgment [R] makes her or an ally invulnerable for 2.5 seconds, then drops swords on everyone nearby.
  • She finishes wounded targets. Starfire Spellblade [E]'s empowered hit deals magic damage based on your missing health.
  • Radiant Blast [Q] softens you up, slowing you and shaving 15% off your armor and magic resist for four seconds.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • She's melee until level 6. Her attack range starts at 175, and she gets the other 350 only when she ascends.
  • She has no dash. The only speed she's got comes from her own heal and from stacking attacks, so a slow or a stun keeps her where she is.
  • Everything runs through attacks. Her passive stacks, her fire waves and Starfire Spellblade [E] all need her to be swinging.
  • Her ultimate is on a long timer early (160 seconds at rank one).

Countering Kayle

You only need one of these to have a plan:

  • Punish her first five levels. She's a melee champion with ordinary stats until she ascends, and every kill or tower plate you take then is time she doesn't get back.
  • Slow or blind her attacks. An attack speed debuff or a blind hits most of her damage at once, because nearly all of it is attached to her basic attacks.

If you're already in lane without either, it's still winnable.

Playing Into Kayle Without a Counter

Freeze the wave near your tower in the early levels. She needs gold and experience more than any other top laner, and farming under pressure is the kind of thing she's worst at while she's still melee.

Track Divine Judgment [R]. If she's got it, don't spend your whole combo on her (she'll turn invulnerable and you'll have wasted it). Make her use it first, then go in.

Ping your jungler early. A melee Kayle with no dash is one of the easier ganks in top lane.

Best Kayle Counters

Three picks, three different reasons they work.

Tahm Kench champion icon

Tahm Kench Eats Her Early Levels

Tahm Kench wants a melee lane, and before level 6 Kayle gives him one. His attacks and Tongue Lash [Q] stack An Acquired Taste [Passive], and at three stacks Tongue Lash [Q] stuns her for 1.5 seconds instead of just slowing her (and the tongue reaches 900 units, a long way past her 175-range attacks).

Her trades don't do much back. Thick Skin [E] stores part of the damage he takes as grey health and heals it back after four seconds without taking damage, so the poke she lands before she's ranged mostly evaporates.

Nasus champion icon

Nasus Cripples Her Attack Speed

Wither [W] is point-and-click from 700 units, which is farther than Kayle can attack even after she turns ranged. It slows her movement and cripples her attack speed for five seconds, and both effects grow every second it lasts (up to a 71% attack speed cut at max rank).

That lands on the one thing she can't do without. With her attacks cut that hard she can't stack her passive, her fire waves barely come out and Nasus gets to walk up and hit her. He scales too, so the late game she's waiting for isn't a problem for him in the same way.

Teemo champion icon

Teemo Blinds Her From Range

Blinding Dart [Q] reaches 680 units and blinds for two to three seconds, so her basic attacks miss for that long, the empowered hit from Starfire Spellblade [E] included. Before 6 Teemo out-ranges her by a mile. His dart still reaches farther than she can attack after that, even at level 16, when her range tops out at 625.

Itemizing Against Kayle

Frozen Heart Force of Nature Kaenic Rookern Wit's End

Frozen Heart is an aura that takes 20% off her attack speed whenever she's near you. Late in the game most of what she deals is magic, so magic resist matters: Force of Nature gives extra resist and speed after eight instances of champion magic damage (she'll reach that fast), and Kaenic Rookern's magic shield absorbs the start of a fight. On a fighter, Wit's End brings magic resist and tenacity together.
