TPA Mistake Posts Thoughts on S3 Support Items

TPA Mistake, professional support player from Taiwan, posted his thoughts on facebook about itemization choices for support champions in Season 3. Contrary to what TSM Xpecial recommends, here's a short summary of what Mistake says to do:
  • Mistake believes that buying both P-stone and Flask on support is a GOOD idea.
  • He recommends still purchasing Oracle's Elixir over Xpecial's recommendation of stacking pink wards
  • Boots of Mobility are his go-to choice on boots. (I concur).
  • He does NOT recommend purchasing Aegis of the Legion, and says to leave it to the junglers since it's too expensive for supports.
Personally I agree with what he says for the most part, but I'm still a fan of buying Aegis since the majority of my junglers seem to prefer stacking Black Cleavers and Bloodthirsters. Anyway, check out his original post below!

Original Post:
Core Items: Philosopher’s Stone, Ruby Sightstone

Item Build
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
↣ Start Crystalline flask, sight ward*4, explorer's ward, biscuit
↣ Early game Sightstone > Philosopher’s Stone > boots
↣ Mid game Oracle, Ruby Sightstone, Boots of Mobility And (if possible) Shurelya’s Reverie
↣ Late game Locket of the Iron Solari or Mikael’s Crucible More wards and oracles
After getting boots, Sightstone, and Philosopher’s Stone, I would buy Oracle’s Elixir and start warding and clearing wards to gain more advantage (and I would keep buying it as long as I can).
In Season 3, the game pace is a lot faster, and so is the gold generation in game. Therefore, it is not necessary to keep gp5 items, so I would upgrade Philosopher’s Stone into Shurelya’s Reverie as soon as I can. Even though Shurelya’s is not as good as it used to be, I still recommend it because it can be used either to initiate a teamfight or to retreat.
Another point is that even if I have purchased Sightstone, I would always buy more wards if I have extra gold.

Boot Choice
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
For champions with poking ability, such as Lulu and Sona, get Boots of Mobility so that you would be able to group up with your team as fast as possible. You can also get this for Blitzcrank and enable him to engage into team fights and control enemies’ positioning faster. You may also buy Mercury Treads or Sorcerer's Shoes.
However, I don't recommend Ninja Tabi. As for Ionian Boots of Lucidity, you don't really need them since you already have enough CDR from Shurelya’s and your masteries.

Other Support Items
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
☆ Aegis of the Legion Aegis of the Legion is now too expensive for supports to buy. However, junglers can still purchase it since their choice of magic resist items is very limited.
★ Locket of the Iron Solari Currently I highly recommend Locket of the Iron Solari. Kindlegem costs only 850g and provides 200 health. If you upgrade it into Shurelya’s, you gain 250 health (therefore you only get 50 more health from upgrading). Locket, on the other hand, provides 425 health, which means you gain 225 more health. You also get 10% CDR and some armor. It costs no more than 2000g, which is not expensive. Its active is handy against Karthus or enemy teams with lots of AOE.
★ Twin Shadows Twin Shadows gives extra movement speed and CC, and it goes well with initiating champions such as Leona, Taric and Blitzcrank. However, it can only be used to initiate, and its cooldown lasts for 120s, which is quite long.
★ Shard of True Ice This item best suits mana-hungry supports, or teams with many initiating champions (e.g. Amumu, Nocturne). Also, it only takes 60 seconds to cool down.
☆ Zeke’s Herald I don’t recommend this item in the current patch because it only provides 10% Life Steal and 20 Attack Damage, degrading it into nothing more than a Vampiric Scepter plus a Long Sword (1200g). And since both AP and support don’t need this item at all, it doesn’t help the team much.
★ Mikael’s Crucible If the enemy's champions have a lot of CC (e.g. Maokai, Varus), you can use this to remove CC.

﹉﹉﹉﹉﹉﹉﹉﹉﹉﹉﹉﹉﹉﹉﹉﹉

  1. I have to say i agree with you on aegis, altough he makes a point that it is expensive it is also worth it. And I haven't seen many junglers actually building it. And ignoring gp5 items isn't the best way to go i think, if you want to buy oracle's a lot you need all the gold you can get,

Hi Phoibos, that's definitely a good point you make on oracles. Even if you can stay alive for the full duration of the oracles, it's unlikely that you can make all the money back directly from clearing wards.

On the other hand, there's always the "opportunity cost" of not getting an oracle, if you can clear 4 wards and prevent 1 death/get 1 kill indirectly from buying an oracle, then it was definitely worth it. Thanks for posting!

  3. I personally don't like the sightstones or maybe I'm retarded. But i prefer to have one slot only for wards and always have 5 rather than an item that let me use only 3 wards.

  4. I find it harder to use Oracle's to better use now though.
However, I did like the change on Oracles, it makes people think twice about buying it, considering the opportunity cost you mentioned, etc.
