VAN 9090 in VALORANT: TPM 2.0 needs setting up again
Riot VanguardVALORANTThe message
VAN 9090: TPM 2.0 initialization failure. The TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module) has recently been cleared, please reinitialize your TPM.What it means
TPM 2.0 is present but didn't initialize properly, often because it was recently cleared and needs setting up again.
What to try first
Open tpm.msc and check the TPM reports as ready. Restart the PC once it does, then launch VALORANT.
Is it you or Riot? If a lot of players got the same code at once, it's likely the servers. Check Riot's service status page for VALORANT before you start reinstalling things.
Seeing it in League instead? VAN 9090 is a Vanguard code, so League can throw it too. The League version is here: VAN 9090 in League of Legends.
9090 is about a cleared TPM
VAN 9001 says TPM 2.0 is switched off. VAN 9090 is the next problem along: the TPM is there, but it didn't initialize. The popup says the TPM was recently cleared, and Riot's article agrees that a cleared TPM, or one that needs setting up again, is the usual cause. Riot's TPM guide notes one way that happens: switching the BIOS from a 1.2 TPM mode to 2.0 wipes the TPM's keys.
Getting it back
Riot sends you to the same TPM guide as 9001. Check tpm.msc first. If it doesn't say the TPM is ready for use, make sure PTT or fTPM is still enabled in the BIOS (a BIOS reset can switch it off), save, and restart. Then launch VALORANT.
Already reading ready at version 2.0 and still blocked? Riot puts that down to BIOS firmware that stops the TPM from fully initializing. The answer is the newest BIOS for your exact board, then a check that PTT or fTPM is still on afterward.
Riot's fix, in Riot's order
Riot's VAN 9090 article has no numbered list of its own. It points to the TPM 2.0 guide, which this step follows, with a restart afterwards.
Turn on TPM 2.0
Press Win+R and run
tpm.msc. "The TPM is ready for use" with Specification Version 2.0 means you're fine. Version 1.2 isn't enough, and "Compatible TPM cannot be found" means it's switched off in the BIOS.To switch it on, reach the firmware settings from Windows (Settings, Recovery, Advanced startup, then Troubleshoot, Advanced options, UEFI Firmware Settings) or press Del, F2 or F10 while the PC starts. On Intel boards enable PTT (Platform Trust Technology); on AMD enable fTPM. Save with F10. A plug-in TPM chip covers VAN 9001, but a VAN: RESTRICTION wants the firmware TPM specifically.
