VAN 9001 in VALORANT: turn on TPM 2.0

Riot VanguardVALORANT

The message

VAN9001. This build of Vanguard requires TPM 2.0 to be enabled in order to play.

What it means

Vanguard needs TPM 2.0 for its security checks, and it doesn't see TPM 2.0 enabled on this PC.

What to try first

Run tpm.msc. If it doesn't show a ready TPM on version 2.0, enable Intel PTT or AMD fTPM in the BIOS.

Is it you or Riot? If a lot of players got the same code at once, it's likely the servers. Check Riot's service status page for VALORANT before you start reinstalling things.

Seeing it in League instead? VAN 9001 is a Vanguard code, so League can throw it too. The League version is here: VAN 9001 in League of Legends.

The Windows 11 trio

Riot's VALORANT support site files VAN 9001 alongside VAN 9003 and VAN 9090 under one heading about Windows 11, and that link now forwards to Riot's shared Vanguard error list. All three are about the PC's security hardware. 9001 means TPM 2.0 isn't enabled, 9003 means Secure Boot is off, and 9090 means TPM 2.0 is there but failed to start up.

Riot's article for 9001 is two sentences long. Vanguard relies on TPM 2.0, it can't see it enabled, and you should follow Riot's TPM guide. The step below is that guide in short.

You probably already have one

Most PCs from the last several years have a firmware TPM built into the processor, often switched off by default. It's called PTT on Intel boards and fTPM on AMD boards. Turning it on is a single BIOS setting, saved with F10. If tpm.msc reports version 1.2, that isn't enough for Vanguard. If you use BitLocker, Riot warns that switching TPM versions wipes the TPM's keys, so suspend it or have the recovery key ready first.

Riot's fix, in Riot's order

  1. Turn on TPM 2.0

Press Win+R and run tpm.msc. "The TPM is ready for use" with Specification Version 2.0 means you're fine. Version 1.2 isn't enough, and "Compatible TPM cannot be found" means it's switched off in the BIOS.

To switch it on, reach the firmware settings from Windows (Settings, Recovery, Advanced startup, then Troubleshoot, Advanced options, UEFI Firmware Settings) or press Del, F2 or F10 while the PC starts. On Intel boards enable PTT (Platform Trust Technology); on AMD enable fTPM. Save with F10. A plug-in TPM chip covers VAN 9001, but a VAN: RESTRICTION wants the firmware TPM specifically.
