Error 9S 6U: the client can't reach some League servers
League clientServer sideRiot's name for this error
League of Legends error code 9S 6UWhat it means
The League client lost touch with part of Riot's backend, so the Play button greys out and shows the code when you hover it. Riot Support has listed 9S and 6U during live outages.
What to try first
Check League server status first. If nothing's reported, fully close the Riot Client from the system tray and log back in.
Is it you or Riot? If lots of players are hitting this at once, it's probably the servers. Check League server status before you start reinstalling things.
Where you'll see it
9S and 6U don't usually come as a popup. You log in, the client loads, and the Play button stays grey. Hover over it and you get a short note saying the client needs to reach Riot's servers, with the code attached. The two codes travel together often enough that most reports name both.
Riot has never written a support article for either code. The closest thing to an official explanation came from Riot's Spanish support account on November 13, 2024, which named 0U, 9S and 6U in one post. League and TFT were having trouble letting people play normally, and the team was investigating. So at least some of the time, this one is Riot's problem and there's nothing on your PC to fix.
What to do about it
Start with League server status. If there's an incident running, waiting is the fix. Reinstalling won't speed it up.
If the servers look healthy, close the Riot Client properly (right-click its tray icon and exit, since closing the window leaves it running) and sign back in. When the grey button survives a restart and a quiet status page, open a ticket with Riot Player Support and give them the code. A player who did that back in 2020 was told the game was failing to talk to League's servers and was given a few addresses to ping, which is Riot's way of checking whether your connection can reach them at all.
It's a close cousin of Error 0U, which shows up in the same spot with the same symptom.
What players found
The PBE had a long run of 9S 6U in September 2025. Players found the Play button would eventually turn blue if they left the client sitting on the home screen for an hour or two without touching the store, loot or other tabs. Opening one of those tabs afterwards could break queueing again. Several suspected the client was choking on loading everything an account owns, because brand-new accounts got in straight away while players with huge skin and TFT collections waited longest (some never got in at all). It cleared up for most people around September 19 and came back briefly in December.
That workaround was specific to the PBE. On the live servers, the reports cluster around outages and clear up when Riot fixes things on its end.
