"Client is not responding": the League freeze Riot tied to Intel drivers

What it means

Riot lists this freeze among the symptoms of one update-related bug, next to a loading screen that never ends and logins that fail. Its first fix is the Intel graphics driver.

What to try first

If your PC has integrated Intel graphics, install Intel's newest graphics driver before trying anything else.

Is it you or Riot? If lots of players are hitting this at once, it's probably the servers. Check League server status before you start reinstalling things.

Where Riot files this freeze

Riot doesn't give this message an article of its own. It sits on a shared League and VALORANT page dated July 8, 2024, in a list of six ways a single update-related bug shows itself. Two of the others are error lines too: "You've lost connection to our services" and the crash notice with a quick repair. The rest are symptoms with no message at all, like a loading screen that hangs or a champion you can't lock in before the match.

The cause Riot names is an old integrated Intel graphics driver that isn't signed correctly. Some antivirus programs shipped files with the same signing problem, which is why antivirus comes second.

How to fix it

All three messages on Riot's page get one fix list, so it's written out here and the two sibling pages cover what's different about each.

  1. Update the Intel graphics driver. This is for PCs with integrated Intel graphics. Not sure what you have? Riot's crash guide says to press Win+R, run dxdiag and read the card's name and maker on the Display tab. Then get the current driver from Intel's download center.
  2. Put VALORANT and Vanguard on your antivirus exception list. Riot's wording names VALORANT even for League players (Vanguard is the anti-cheat both games share). If the exceptions don't help, switch the antivirus off.
  3. Update every other driver and firmware, motherboard and processor included.
  4. Contact Riot Player Support if the client still locks up.

Riot's page carries a July 2024 date, and the fix list above is all it says.
