How to Beat Trundle
Trundle wins duels by taking the things that made you good at duels and using them himself.
He's the most straightforward champion in the top lane and among the most annoying, because his kit is aimed directly at whatever your team drafted to be tough. Armor, health, magic resist, attack damage: he takes some of it and keeps it for a while. Fighting him fairly is a losing proposition against almost anything that also wants to fight fairly. What beats him is range, sustained damage he can't heal through, and the simple fact that he has no way at all to close a gap somebody else decided to open.
- Range, because he has no way to reach you
- Healing reduction, since the sustain is most of the duel
- Damage that isn't blunted by the stats he just borrowed

Trundle Overview
Strengths: What Makes Him Dangerous
- He counters exactly what he's supposed to lose to. Subjugate [R] takes resistances off a tank and puts them on him (so the person drafted to hold him back becomes the person least able to).
- The sustain in a fight is enormous. Between the healing zone and the passive he gets health back faster than most duels can remove it, and a long fight against him is a fight he's winning by default.
- The pillar splits a fight in half. Terrain placed behind somebody is a wall between them and help, and it turns a two on one into two consecutive one on ones.
- He takes objectives absurdly fast. Single target damage plus sustain is exactly the profile that solo kills a dragon, and he'll do it even if his team wasn't ready.
Weaknesses: Where You Get In
- He can't close a gap. No dash, no leap, no ranged threat. Anybody who decides not to be near him gets that outcome for free.
- Healing reduction takes most of him away. The item is cheap, it's available early, and it changes a duel he was winning comfortably into one he loses.
- He's ordinary in a real team fight. He wants a corridor and one target. Five people in an open space is the shape of fight where the pillar helps less and the lack of mobility hurts more.
- Percentage damage cuts through the stolen stats. He converts himself into a large health bar (the specific thing certain carries are built to treat as an easy target).
- He has nothing to do while being kited. The whole kit assumes contact. Denying contact is just the correct way to play the matchup.
Countering Trundle
Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Trundle comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:
- Buy the healing reduction before anything else. It's the single item that decides this lane, and buying it late is how a manageable matchup becomes an unplayable one.
- Have range, or don't take the matchup. A ranged top laner beats him without doing anything special. A melee one has to be right about every trade.
- Don't stand next to your own tank when he ults. The stats he takes come from a specific person, and that person choosing to be somewhere else at the right moment is real counterplay.
- Watch for the pillar going up behind you. The escape route closes before the fight starts. Positioning with an exit in mind is worth more against him than against almost anyone.
If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:
Playing a Bad Trundle Matchup
Give up the wave and take the experience from a safe distance. He gets nothing from a lane he can't touch, and there's no poke in his kit to punish you for standing back.
Fight him where your team can reach you. Every good version of his game is a fight in a side lane with one wall and two people, and none of it survives a third person arriving.
Take the objective while he's committed elsewhere rather than contesting it while he's there. He's one of the fastest solo objective takers in the game and one of the slowest travelers, and the second half of that is exploitable.
Best Trundle Counters
Beat him with range, with a stance his attacks can't hit through, or by simply never agreeing to the fight.

Teemo Wins At Range
A blind turns off the part of the duel he's built around, and by the time it's over he's taken a lot of damage and dealt very little.
The lane after that is a farming exercise for one of them. He has no way to reach past minions and no way to punish somebody who never steps forward.

Jax Makes Him Miss
Trundle's duel is built on basic attacks, and his bite is one of them. Counter Strike [E] dodges every basic attack for two seconds and then stuns everyone around Jax, hitting harder for each attack it dodged.
So he runs in to bite, the bite misses, and he's stunned next to a champion who only gets stronger as the game goes on.

Singed Never Fights Him
He has nothing that catches somebody moving faster than him, and the whole matchup collapses into a chase he can't win.
The map pressure matters more. Trundle wants a duel; this is a lane that refuses to have one and then takes towers somewhere else.
Itemizing Against Trundle
The first one is the matchup and the other three are for the version where he reaches you anyway:

Executioner's Calling is the purchase this whole guide is really about, because the sustain is his duel, and cutting it changes the outcome of every fight he's in. Plated Steelcaps handles the damage (basic attacks that keep arriving for as long as he's standing next to somebody). Frozen Heart is the better of the two armor items here since taking attack speed away takes the healing with it, and that compounds with the first purchase rather than overlapping it. Randuin's Omen suits whoever has to hold him in a side lane (the slow is worth more than usual against a champion with no way to close a gap on his own).
