How to Beat Shen

Matchup Guide · Evergreen · 3 Counter Picks

Shen isn't trying to beat you. He's trying to be somewhere else, and to make the fact that he left cost you nothing to complain about.

He's the only top laner whose best play happens on a part of the map you can't see. He wins his lane by not really contesting it, spends the gold he didn't need on being unkillable, and then decides a fight three screens away by pressing one button at the right second. Almost nobody loses to Shen in a duel. They lose because a bot lane died at nine minutes and nobody made him pay for being there, and by the time that pattern is obvious the game is already the one he wanted.

What a Counter Needs
  • The ability to take something while he's away, quickly and alone
  • Damage that goes through a shield rather than waiting for it to expire
  • Enough safety that his taunt isn't a free kill for a jungler

Shen Overview

Strengths: What Makes Him Dangerous

  • He decides a fight he's not in. Stand United [R] arrives from anywhere, and the shield is usually worth more than the entire kill your team had already earned.
  • He doesn't need gold to matter. A Shen who's down two levels and no items still has the same ultimate, which isn't true of any other top laner you can put behind.
  • The taunt makes your escape into his engage. Shadow Dash [E] is short, but it's aimed at the moment you decided to walk away, and it's the reason ganks against him land.
  • He shrugs off a lane he is losing. The Ki Barrier [Passive] shield he gets after every spell he casts means chip damage doesn't accumulate, so winning the lane by a bit is the same as not winning it.
  • Every other lane plays braver because of him. The threat of the ultimate is doing work even on the many occasions it isn't up. Teams take fights they would otherwise decline.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • He can't kill you. The damage simply isn't there. A top laner who survives the taunt and the jungler isn't in any danger from Shen himself at any point in the game.
  • The ultimate is a long channel and it's visible. He has to stand still somewhere, and a team that starts the fight by killing him rather than the person he's protecting has ended it before he arrives.
  • Leaving lane leaves a lane. Every trip across the map is a tower he isn't defending, and the punishment for it is simple: a champion standing in the empty lane hitting the tower.
  • The shield is a shield. It can be pierced, and it can be spent. Both are cheap and neither takes any skill to arrange.
  • He has nothing for a champion who won't fight him. No range, no gap closer worth the name, and no way to make anybody accept the duel he's offering.

Countering Shen

Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Shen comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:

  • Take a tower every time he leaves. This is the counter, and you build it as a habit. He's paid in the fights he saves. You get paid in the buildings he wasn't standing near.
  • Kill him before you kill the person he shielded. He's the softest target in the fight the moment the ultimate lands, and everything he did is undone by removing him rather than out damaging him.
  • Buy shield reduction instead of more damage. Trying to out damage the shield is the losing version of the same idea. Making it worth less is cheaper and it lasts the whole fight.
  • Ward for the taunt instead of the gank. The dash is what turns a normal jungle path into a kill. Seeing the jungler is worth much less than not being in dash range when he shows up.

If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:

Playing a Bad Shen Matchup

Shove the wave and go somewhere. He's one of the few top laners who genuinely can't punish you for leaving, because catching a champion who is walking away is the thing he's worst at.

Play for plates rather than for kills. There's no kill in this lane most of the time, and the reward that's actually available is the one nobody bothers to take.

Tell your team when his ultimate is down. That's the only window where the map is normal, and a team that knows about it takes objectives it would otherwise have talked itself out of.

Best Shen Counters

Three ways to beat somebody whose best play is somewhere else: make him regret leaving, beat him when he stays, or leave at the same time he does. One counter each (Tryndamere, Sett and Quinn, in that order).

Tryndamere champion icon

Tryndamere Punishes The Trip

He takes a tower faster than the fight Shen went to save, and there's no version of the lane where Shen kills him for trying.

One of them is choosing to be somewhere else and the other is being paid for it, and the arithmetic isn't close.

Sett champion icon

Sett Wins The Duel

Spirit's Refuge [W] blocks basic attacks, and Sett's fight-winner is an ability. Every hit Shen trades into him fills Grit, and Haymaker [W] cashes it in as a shield before punching back with true damage down the middle. The harder Shen trades, the bigger that punch gets.

Pit Grit [Passive] regenerates more health the lower Sett gets, so short trades get refunded. And if Shen starts channeling Stand United [R] with Sett nearby, Facebreaker [E] yanks him in and the channel is over.

Quinn champion icon

Quinn Leaves At The Same Time

He has no answer to range in lane, and no answer at all to a champion who can cross the map on a similar timer without announcing it with a channel.

The lane is a formality anyway. His one advantage over most top laners stops being an advantage the moment somebody else has it too.

Itemizing Against Shen

The first two are the matchup and the last two are ordinary insurance:

Serpent's FangBlade of The Ruined KingMercury's TreadsControl Ward

Serpent's Fang is the item that addresses him directly, because nearly everything he contributes is a shield (on himself or on somebody a long way away), and the fang makes all of it worth less for the rest of the fight. Blade of The Ruined King is the answer to the health rather than the shield, and it's the reason a duelist beats him even after he has bought defensively. Mercury's Treads shorten the taunt (usually the difference between a gank landing and a gank arriving to find nobody there). A control ward is worth the slot in this matchup specifically, since knowing where he's standing is what turns the ultimate from a surprise into an announcement.
