How to Beat Aatrox

Matchup Guide · Evergreen · 3 Counter Picks

Aatrox is a spacing problem pretending to be a damage problem. He hits hardest at the edge of the sword, and almost nobody fights from anywhere else.

He's built around a long, telegraphed sequence that gets stronger the further into it he goes, and he heals for a share of everything it lands. That's a fight nobody wins by trading fairly. It's also a fight with a very clear structure, and structures can be broken in the middle (which is what almost all of the counterplay below is really doing).

What a Counter Needs
  • Anti-heal, bought early rather than at the point where it's obviously needed
  • A way to spend the fight either inside his swing or entirely outside it, because the edge is where the damage lives
  • Something that ends the sequence early, whether that's crowd control, distance, or simply winning before it starts

Aatrox Overview

Strengths: What Makes Him Dangerous

  • Every fight he survives, he wins twice. The healing means an even exchange leaves him at a health total that lets him take the next one immediately.
  • The third swing is a knock-up. It ends whatever you were doing, and it arrives at the exact moment most people decide to disengage.
  • He drags you back. Walking away from him is a decision he gets a vote on, so the escape you were counting on has a condition attached.
  • His ultimate is a second life. Killing him isn't the same as him being dead, and a team that celebrates too early finds that out inside two seconds.
  • He scales into a teamfight without needing to be fed. The knock-up and the healing both keep working at any gold difference.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • The damage is at the edge. The Darkin Blade [Q] rewards the outer part of each swing, so standing close to him is safer than standing at what looks like a comfortable distance.
  • Anti-heal turns him off. Completely. He's a normal bruiser without the sustain, and the item that does it is cheap.
  • The sequence takes time. There are gaps between the swings, and everything that interrupts him during one deletes the rest of the trade.
  • The second life has a condition. World Ender [R] only brings him back if he gets a takedown, so a team that walks away rather than chasing the reset denies it entirely.
  • He's slow and he can be kited. His dashes are short and mostly go where he was already going (which isn't the same as being mobile).

Countering Aatrox

Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Aatrox comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:

  • Buy anti-heal first. It's the single highest-value purchase anyone makes in this matchup and it's usually bought two deaths too late.
  • Stand inside the swing or well outside it. The middle distance is the one that hurts, and it's also the one that feels correct, which is why the matchup has its reputation.
  • Break the sequence. Any interrupt during the combo costs him more than the same crowd control used at the start of it.
  • Walk away from the reset. Don't chase him after he goes down. That chase is what turns a won fight into a lost one.

If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:

Playing a Bad Aatrox Matchup

Trade during the gaps between swings. He's committed for a moment after each one, and that moment is the only free damage the lane offers.

Don't fight him at full health expecting to get out. The fight gets better for him the longer it runs, so a trade you can't end quickly is one you shouldn't start.

Play for the jungler instead of for the lane. A champion who can't escape is a champion who dies to a gank, and this is one of the few matchups where waiting is a real plan.

Best Aatrox Counters

Three ways to beat a champion who wins long fights and heals through them: end the fight early, never enter the part of it that hurts, or make the healing irrelevant. One counter each.

Renekton champion icon

Renekton Ends It Early

He wins the first six levels comfortably, and none of what he does can be spaced out of. There's no skill shot to land, no sequence to complete, just a stun and a lot of damage arriving faster than the healing can answer.

The catch is the same as it always is with him. A lead he doesn't convert stops mattering around the twenty-minute mark, so this is a matchup you win early or not at all.

Kennen champion icon

Kennen Never Enters The Sweep

Thundering Shuriken [Q] starts the damage from 1050 units, and every ability Kennen lands adds a Mark of the Storm [Passive]. The third one stuns, so an Aatrox walking in to set up The Darkin Blade [Q] tends to get stopped on the way.

Lightning Rush [E] is the exit, with bonus move speed and the ability to pass through units, which is how Kennen leaves before the third swing comes down. A melee champion who heals off damage he lands gets nothing out of a lane where he never lands any.

Malphite champion icon

Malphite Makes The Healing Pointless

Armor is the quiet answer. Healing off a share of damage that isn't getting through is a rounding error, and there's no version of the lane where Malphite has to take a fight he doesn't want.

Itemizing Against Aatrox

Everything here is bought earlier than it feels reasonable to buy it:

Bramble VestChempunk ChainswordPlated SteelcapsRanduin's Omen

Bramble Vest and Chempunk Chainsword are the same idea for the two halves of the roster, and whichever one you can build is the most important item in the matchup by a distance. Plated Steelcaps blunts the basic attacks the healing is attached to. Randuin's Omen is the late-game version of the same answer, aimed at the teamfight (where his knock-up is the reason your carry died) rather than the lane.
