How to Beat K'Sante

Matchup Guide · Evergreen · 3 Counter Picks

K'Sante is two champions sharing one health bar, and most people lose to him by fighting the wrong one.

The half you meet first is a wall. He has the stats, he has the crowd control, and he doesn't especially want to kill you yet. So you commit to killing him instead, and somewhere near the bottom of his health bar he trades the resistances in for speed and damage and the fight starts over with you holding nothing. It's a resource problem, and the fix is upstream of the fight.

K'Sante Overview

Strengths: What Makes Him Dangerous

  • He plays the map against you. Path Maker [W] turns every wall in the lane into a weapon, and there are a lot of walls in the top lane.
  • He becomes a different champion on command. All Out [R] arrives at the point where you thought you'd won, and the champion who comes out of it is faster and hits far harder than the one you were fighting.
  • His crowd control is a steady supply. He doesn't land one big thing and hope. He keeps producing it for as long as the fight lasts (that's why teamfights around him go badly even when he does no damage).
  • He wins the fight you're allowed to have. Trading with the tank half is close to pointless, and a lane where trading is pointless is a lane he controls by default.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • He throws his own defenses away. All Out [R] is the exact second he stops being a tank, and anybody holding a cooldown for it kills a very ordinary melee champion.
  • Away from a wall he's a smaller problem. The engage still works in the open (it just stops ending fights on its own).
  • He has to walk to you. Nothing in the kit answers an opponent who never lets him near the wave, and being pushed in is miserable for a champion whose plan needs a target in range.
  • The charge is visible. It winds up, it commits him to a direction, and it's the opening move of nearly every fight he starts.
  • He's an expensive champion. He wants a lot of gold before either half of him is genuinely scary, and a lane that keeps him from getting it delays the entire problem.

Countering K'Sante

Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating K'Sante comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:

  • Do damage that doesn't care about armor. Percent health and true damage go through the tank half at the same speed they go through anything else, which removes the entire first stage of the fight.
  • Keep the fight in the open. Fighting him in the middle of the lane instead of against the tri-brush wall costs you nothing and costs him his best tool.
  • Save something for the transform. One dash, one shield, one stun. It doesn't matter which, as long as it's still available at the moment he becomes killable.
  • Take the wave away from range. A champion who has to close the distance to accomplish anything is beaten by not being reachable, and that's a whole matchup won without a single trade.

If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:

Playing a Bad K'Sante Matchup

Stand away from terrain when the wave is near his side. Most of the disasters in this lane are one slam into a wall followed by a jungler who was already walking.

Don't spend your escape on the charge. It's the cheap half of what's about to happen, and you'll want the escape thirty seconds later when the expensive half turns up.

Treat him as a team problem rather than a solo one. The tank half isn't worth your time on your own, and there's no shame in farming a lane you can't win and letting four other people solve him at an objective.

Best K'Sante Counters

Skip the armor, outrange the walk, or punish the second he stops being a tank.

Fiora champion icon

Fiora Parry, Then Percent Health

Her parry answers the engage directly, so the lane's already awkward for him, and it's the rare defensive cooldown that punishes him for using his best button rather than merely surviving it.

Then there's the damage. True damage scaled off his own health bar means the resistances he spent the whole game buying do nothing, and the tank half of the matchup simply never happens.

Vayne champion icon

Vayne Built For Both Halves

Percent health from range is the answer to the first half, and a fragile melee champion sprinting at her in a straight line is the answer to the second. Very few picks are comfortable against both versions of him. She's one.

Granted, she has to survive the early lane, and that's a real cost.

Quinn champion icon

Quinn Never Has The Fight

She's the opposite approach and it works just as well. Quinn doesn't beat him in a duel and doesn't try. She shoves the wave into his tower, leaves, and takes something somewhere else while he sits in a lane full of minions he can't leave.

Itemizing Against K'Sante

His damage is mostly physical and it arrives steadily rather than all at once, so the buys split between shortening the tank half and staying alive through what comes after it:

Blade of The Ruined KingPlated SteelcapsLord Dominik's RegardsDeath's Dance

Blade of The Ruined King is the first buy for a reason: percent health damage is the only kind that treats his stats as irrelevant, and it's what turns an unwinnable trade into an even one. Plated Steelcaps is aimed at the chip rather than the burst (a long fight against him is mostly attacks landing over and over). Lord Dominik's Regards belongs to the first half of the fight specifically, and it does progressively less as the fight goes on (he removes the resistances himself). Death's Dance covers the other end: the version of him that comes out of the transform kills people who had exactly enough health a moment earlier, and smoothing that damage out over a few seconds is often all the margin you need.
