How to Beat Dr. Mundo
Dr. Mundo isn't hard to beat. He's hard to finish, and those two problems look identical right up to the moment the game is over.
He's the simplest champion on the board and that's exactly why players lose to him. There's no combo to read, no window to bait and almost nothing to outplay. He walks forward, he throws something at you, and then he goes away and comes back with the health he lost. The mistake is treating that as a problem to be solved with damage. What actually solves it is two component items and a decision about where the game is going to be played, and the players who make both of those decisions early rarely find him difficult at all.
- Grievous wounds, bought before it feels urgent
- Damage that scales with his health rather than against it
- A second lane, because he cannot be everywhere

Dr. Mundo Overview
Strengths: What Makes Him Dangerous
- He undoes the lane between waves. The healing is large, it's available on demand, and it means a poke lane against him is a lane that resets every time he walks out of vision.
- He ignores the first thing you do to him. Goes Where He Pleases [Passive] throws off one piece of crowd control on a timer (the piece most plans were built around).
- He doesn't need gold to be a nuisance. The early damage is a thrown cleaver (it costs nothing), so shutting down his farm does much less than it should.
- He arrives, and then he doesn't leave. Once his ultimate is running he's fast, large and healing, and a team that decided to fight him rather than around him usually finds out too late that there was no plan for ending it.
Weaknesses: Where You Get In
- Grievous wounds is close to a hard counter. Almost everything he does depends on getting health back. A cheap component cuts that in half and turns the matchup into an ordinary one immediately.
- Percent health damage undoes his build. His answer to everything is a larger health bar, and the counter to a larger health bar has been sitting in the shop for years.
- He can't catch anybody. Outside his ultimate he's slow and has no gap closer, so a champion who doesn't want to fight him simply doesn't have to.
- His early damage is a skillshot and nothing else. The cleaver is the whole threat before he has items, and a player who dodges it is in a lane where he isn't doing anything at all.
- He's bad at being in two places. He's slow, he doesn't push quickly without items, and a game happening on the other side of the map is a game he attends late or not at all.
Countering Dr. Mundo
Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Dr. Mundo comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:
- Buy grievous wounds first. It's the single decision that changes the matchup and it costs less than most players wait for. Everything else on this list works better once it's in the inventory.
- Bring percent health damage. A flat number against a champion who solves problems by buying health is the least efficient thing in your build, and swapping one slot fixes it.
- Spend a cheap piece of crowd control first. He shrugs off one. Making the one he shrugs off the one that didn't matter is free, and it takes a bit of patience rather than any mechanical skill.
- Take the game somewhere he isn't. He's slow and he can't leave a lane quickly. A team that keeps starting fights away from him is a team playing four against five on purpose.
If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:
Playing a Bad Dr. Mundo Matchup
Give up the trades and take the farm. He'll win a health war, and there's no version of the early lane where fighting it was correct. Sit back, take what's safe, and buy the item that changes the arithmetic.
Dodge the cleaver and the lane stops existing. It's his only real source of early damage and it's a single slow projectile, so most of the health you lose to him before the first item is health you agreed to lose.
Don't follow him when his ultimate is up. He's faster than you (and healing while he runs), so the chase ends with him turning around somewhere his team is standing and yours isn't.
Best Dr. Mundo Counters
Out-heal him on your own ground, take a percentage of what he built, or fight the game somewhere he is too slow to reach.

Illaoi Out-Heals Him Near a Wall
Illaoi fights next to walls, where her tentacles spawn, and every tentacle slam that hits Mundo heals her for part of her missing health. He's used to being the one who walks away from a trade healthier. Here he usually isn't.
Test of Spirit [E] pulls his spirit out and passes a share of the damage it takes back to him. Walking away to break the tether isn't an escape either, because it slows him hard and marks him, and new tentacles keep coming for him while the mark lasts.

Quinn Never Lets Him Close
He has no way of covering distance in lane, so a ranged top laner who keeps her spacing takes the entire matchup away without ever risking a trade.
She also punishes the thing he's worst at. He's slow and he answers a split push late, and by the time he has walked over the tower is already gone.

Gwen The Health Does Not Help
Every hit Gwen lands takes a slice of his maximum health, and the center of Snip Snip! [Q] turns part of it into true damage. Mundo's plan is to build more health than you can chew through, and her damage grows every time he does.
Hallowed Mist [W] makes her untargetable to anyone standing outside it, so a cleaver thrown from range doesn't reach her. He has to walk in to fight her, which is exactly what she wants him to do.
Itemizing Against Dr. Mundo
Two of these decide the matchup and the other two make the fights afterward survivable:

Executioner's Calling is the buy that matters and it should be sitting in the inventory before it looks necessary, because everything he does is priced against getting health back and this makes that price wrong. Blade of The Ruined King is the second half of the same idea and it belongs on whoever is holding a weapon (it converts his own build into your damage rather than fighting against it). Kaenic Rookern is aimed at his early damage (magic, and most of what he threatens before the game gets long). Mercury's Treads is the boot for whoever he ends up chasing, because his ultimate makes him faster than the person running away and shortening every slow he applies is the difference between escaping and not.
