Weird Picks #104: Titanic Hydra Jungle Cho'Gath

Cho'Gath is without a doubt, the hardest scaling late game champion in the game. His kit renders him as a basic-looking champion on the surface, but what other champion can consistently end games with 5000 to 6000 HP while dealing massive scaling true damage?

This build pushes Cho'Gath from a pure tank into an incredibly strong bruiser instead. Titanic Hydra stacks superbly with Vorpal Spikes to deal insane amounts of AOE damage just by auto-attacking. The best part is, he'll still be nearly unkillable. Check out how to play below!

Rune Setup

How It Works

Free Slow Via Stalker's Blade
Hitting Cho'Gath's spells may be difficult until you close the gap, but by equipping him with Stalker's Blade, catching up to slowed enemies is an easy task. This allows him to dish his double-empowered Vorpal Spikes + Titanic Hydra AOE combo.

Cinderhulk Access
The Cinderhulk enchantment gives an incredible 15% health boost to an already impossibly large champion. That alone is enough to make top laners consider getting smite just so they can build Cinderhulk. The best part is that it can be combined into a single item slot with his stalker's blade, allowing him more room to build health items without losing any utility.

Massive Scaling
This build allows Cho'Gath to scale both his true damage and his empowered auto-attacks simultaneously. While the standard Cho'Gath build is already very strong, it is somewhat prone to cooldown reliance when it comes to dishing damage. Titanic Hydra makes him impossible to ignore late-game, even when his ultimate is down.

Potential Pitfalls

Slower Tank Scaling
The only real downside of getting Titanic Hydra on Cho'Gath is that he could replace it with a higher health granting item to increase his true damage burst. His attack speed also isn't that high, which means he won't be able to utilize it quite as well as someone like Jax.

Slow Hard-CC and no Gap Closer
Most junglers either have a fast CC or a gap closer to enable better ganks. Some jungle Cho'Gaths go with the Predator rune for that reason. However, doing so takes away the massive tank scaling he gets from the the resolve tree.

Conclusions

As Riot targets multiple FOTM champions for nerfs, Cho'Gath has become incredibly strong in comparison. Keep a close watch for him in the near future, he's definitely a champion worth noting, and this build in particular is very oppressive.

Suggested Tier: Tier 1
