2014 Champion Tier List - Ranked 3s Twisted Treeline - Patch 4.9 Update

SEASON 4 - PATCH 4.9 RANKED THREES TIER LIST
Season 4 UPDATE

Introduction
While I'm by no means a guru on the Twisted Treeline I do enjoy playing the game mode quite a bit and hope that they'll move the solo queue 3v3 over from the PBE servers to the live servers some day.

That being said, take this tier list with a grain of salt and feel free to engage in open debate in the comment section with your own thoughts and comments. As the game mode isn't all that popular right now, hopefully this list will help spur some of you to try it out!

Current List Updates
Since the end of last season to now, there really haven't been any major shifts to the 3s scene as far as I can see based on experience and statistics, and many of the same champions that were strong before are still strong.

That being said, there were some slight changes which I'll note below.

Current Metagame
Right now there are two main methods of playing Twisted Treeline:
  1. Duo top with a support like Leona or Annie
  2. Two solo lanes with a jungler
For the most part it seems like the NA region prefers the jungler meta, whereas the EU region prefers the support meta. I can't say for sure which one is better, but personally I think the support meta gives a much safer early game, which allows you to potentially snowball off of.

Based off of this, I'm splitting this tier list into "roles" similar to the solo queue 5s list. However, as there are only 3 positions open, I won't be including every champion into this list. If you feel that I've missed out on a strong champion, please let me know and I'll include it in the next update.

AD Ranged: Quinn, Lucian, Corki, Jinx, Vayne, Ezreal

Tier 3 [Not Played Often]: Everybody else. Not to say that you can't win with other champions, but for the most part the ones above will give you plenty to work with. Feel free to try out other strategies and post your experiences in the comment section below!

    AD/AP Positioning
Due to the way the map is arranged, bot lane is generally considered the "safer" lane, so the solo laner almost always goes here. However, as this game mode is somewhat uncommon, you may see teams send two champions to bot lane. As a result, it's generally best to send an AP bot with long range waveclear, as these champions can deal with both 1v1 and 1v2 lanes.

This means that for the most part, the AD based champion will go top. However, swapping these around isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's a good idea to make sure that you have a mix of damage types so that the enemy team can't easily itemize against you.

    Champion Explanations
    • Amumu [Tier 1 Jungle] - Amumu's early game isn't that great, but providing you grab a few champions with strong early game, his sustained magic damage does really well against a lot of the tanky champions that are popular on the rift. Also, his bandage toss has a surprisingly long range and allows him to gank over the ledges with decent success rate.
    • Annie [Tier 1 Support] - Annie's nerfs since Season 3 have left her slightly weaker all around.
    • Braum [God Tier Support] - Braum's not bad on Twisted Treeline, and with the nerfs on Annie he can be very very strong if you play him correctly.
    • Corki [Tier 2 ADC] - Corki's not terrible on Twisted Treeline and can be a viable ADC if you so choose to play him.
    • Diana [God Tier AP] - While Diana's been a popular pick and definitely praised, her stats don't show her as being quite as overwhelming as others. She's definitely a strong contender though.
    • Jarvan IV [God Tier Jungle] - Those familiar with Jarvan's summoner's rift domination probably won't be too surprised that he's stronger than ever on Twisted Treeline, where he's always been a crowd favorite.
    • Kayle [God Tier AP] - Considering her overwhelming presence on Summoner's Rift I think it's no surprise that she's made it to the top of Twisted Treeline too, where a single ultimate can completely wreck havoc on even a substantial lead.
    • Lulu [God Tier AP] - Lulu is absolutely ridiculous on Twisted Treeline right now, and is by far the strongest of the APs. I'd suggest banning her on this map.
    • Warwick [Tier 1 Jungle] - Warwick's not so great early game, but his late game tankiness and CC provide a decent amount to a team comp.
    • Yasuo [Tier 1 AD] - While Yasuo is definitely the most popular pick in 3s solo queue, he actually doesn't perform amazingly compared to a lot of other champions in arranged team play. He's still very strong though.
    Disclaimer:
    • The purpose of this list is for discussion and to provide a starting point for hero selection.

Ehhhm , I think you are missing Tryn in the god tier section . Hes obvioulsy the strongest trader in this game ,because of his ultimate and his passiv. And especially on the TT map , whcih is so small and where noone can run aways from hin ,srsly i mean it like this ...when 2 ppl come to gank he will have a free tripple kill. The biggest problem is his normal to weak early game , but experienced players will still wreck and tryn is the sorta champ who wrecks even if you suck at the start . Fiora is missing to i think (also god tier i think) especially becauser of her ult which is now doing her most on 3 guys and not 5 . And at last could you explain me why singed is tier 2 ? Im playing really often on the TT and i know that hes good really good extremly good , he can carry games on this map like woooow , his tankyness pls his crazy dmg and mobility woooooow . I would say he is tier 1 or even god tier

    2. Jarvan IV is placed in both the God and Tier 1 AD roles
Not a big deal, because I'm sure this wasn't one of your goals
Will you repost to fix this?
Or just wait till next list?

Tryndamere: Very hard to master, high slkillcap, lot of risk especially against people like Jarvan or Riven, very vulnerable to CC, relies too heavily on crits and farm, and can get kited easily. He's been falling as of late in win rate as well. He should be higher on Tier 2, but not anywhere near God.
Fiora: Just because of her ult doesn't mean anything, especially since the top AD meta is very, very far from squishy. Renekton, Riven, and Jarvan would just run right through her and carry on. Tier 1 at best.
Singed: Do you even play Twisted Treeline?!? I haven't seen him in AGES! His win rate is shoddy at best, usually revolving around 45% (except in normal TT, but that has nothing to do with this as this is about ranked). Far outclassed by popular picks, and if anywhere he would have to be Tier 2. What do you mean he can carry games easily? When he's played on this map he's known to be TANKY, not damaging.

Thanks for your feedback ShadowSect, I think some of the people on the solo queue list were wondering where you were! I'll just touch on a two points but I'll consider everything you mentioned.

Pantheon - I actually haven't, what settings are you looking at? I base most of my stats off of lolking, but didn't notice pantheon on the charts.

Shyvana's always been a popular pick on TT just because of her super fast clear time and massive AOE abilities, I think she's more of a damage soaker that can't be ignored. The long lanes also make great use of her chasing abilities and make up for her lack of CC.

      Fixed, thanks!

I know what Shyv is good at, I'm just nitpicky (read:biased).
As for Panth, he is banned most of the time so me giving a win rate was rather mean of me, and kinda stupid, although when I do play him I play him rather well.
And yeah, I've been away because I couldn't handle Axis comments anymore...
Jk, although that would be one, I've just been playing TT and ARAM a LOT, and I'm kind of behind now on the rift, although I have some idea that Jax is still really OP.

By the way, Brand is also placed both in the God and Tier 1 AP Roles.
And when will you post the Tier 4.10 Lists?

      ReplyDelete
    12. He hit 85% ban rate on the rift. Any game he's not banned, he's picked up.

There's a lotta fuss about Thresh Dropped to Teir 1 support. Other than that, just the usual fuss for more random Teir 4's to be added and x champ being OP.

Pretty happy this patch, as in a top lane thread 200 or 300 comments ago, someone othesomo (if that's how u spell it?) convinced me to pick up Irealia. Love her! No enemies of mine know how to play against her, despite her picks in the LCS (low win rate there, like 33%).

Thanks for the recap, I'll get on rift again eventually, though for right now I'll just be playing Support and mid, the only things I excel at without practice.
And believe me, Disqus Digests told me a lot about people talking about unorthodox roles that I've already tried and 90% of the time, doesn't work in solo queue.
Since I finally got Nami though, I'm going to be playing her a lot, so expect what I think XD.

    15. ShadowSectJune 20, 2014

Very squishy early game, which is a huge problem. He doesn't have the benefit of feral flare, even after the nerf. He has a lot of counters that are very, very popular. I do think he should be here on Tier 1 or Tier 2, but he is no god, my friend.

The 6 bans are almost always Cassiopeia, Syndra, Evelynn, Pantheon, Morgana, and Lee Sin.

SSJSustanic, could you give me some thoughts on why Kayle AD is so strong?

      ReplyDelete
    18. ShadowSectJune 20, 2014

I may not be SSJ, but I can give some input.
I think SSJ may have made a mistake by putting Kayle AD top as God, as she's mostly played AP 80% of the time. Although, her win rate is almost always 60%, and with Runaan's she's a REAL menace with an 79.6% win rate with it.

    19. DUploratoxJune 20, 2014

In my opinion Swain is the best AP for Twisted Treeline, strong early game, off tank, sustain , AOE damage

      ReplyDelete
    20. ShadowSectJune 21, 2014

Balanced at best. The meta of AP casters in TT is burst, which Swain actually lacks early to mid game, which is a problem on the TT as there really is no late game.
Strong early game? Against people like Syndra? NO!
He actually has one of the worst early games on the TT, and junglers do really well against him when ganking.
Health sustain? Yes. Mana sustain? God no. He's one of the most mana hungry champions in the game in a teamfight, and even the bonus mana regen doesn't help.
Off tank? Maybe, but you certainly don't want to build him that way on Treeline. It won't work, and your team will be out of an bursty AP caster.
He also is slightly bad at pushing until late mid game, which is a HUGE problem.
He's also countered by the VERY popular AP casters, such as Syndra, Morgana, Cassiopeia, Ziggs, Lulu, and Orianna, which all of them either have more burst or a better early game than Swain.

    21. After reading. "Tryndamere: Very hard to master , high skillcap." I cannot take you seriously...

      ReplyDelete
    22. ShadowSectJune 22, 2014

Tryndamere: This isn't rift. There's a whole different playstyle to consider and how to deal with popular tops that deal more damage early on. He's not exactly a pick up and play champion on TT. You have to have the right mindset.
Rumble: Bad early game and the lack of a late game on TT. His win rate is terrible too.

      ReplyDelete
    23. If it is the mindset then you cannot just say that for just Tryndamere.

      ReplyDelete
    24. ShadowSectJune 22, 2014

No, other champions are far easier to use on TT. Syndra, for example, is pretty much burst the enemy champion. Master Yi is to stay in jungle and gank effectively. Tryndamere, though, needs to watch the enemy team very carefully. That top deals more damage than I can, how do I get around this? Is the jungler going to gank? What items should I go for with a different itemset on TT?
Not to mention he's already NOT good on TT anyway damage wise. Other champions do far more damage, so you have to have a mindset unlike many of the others.

    25. bturner4559June 22, 2014

Not this guy again. Listen up kids shadowsect says trynd cant be god tier because hes hard to play but leblanc should be even.though she isnt for the same reasons. You are a joke stop responding to everyones comments with your half crocked logic.

      ReplyDelete
    26. ShadowSectJune 22, 2014

@bturner4559 Going to reply to bturner without replying because I can't since his comment is apparently moderated.
Trynd is hard to play because he DOESN'T DO WELL! LB is hard to play because she requires skill, not because she simply doesn't do well. That's a whole different playstyle anyway, so why judge the difference?
That doesn't even matter because this is a TT tier list, not a Rift tier list, and TT has a whole different playstyle.

And if you're talking about LB on TT, she actually does rather well, and is not OP but a very viable pick. She doesn't require as much skill as Rift LB because she's so bursty and TT LOVES bursty APCs.

    28. Eric AndradeJune 27, 2014

What about Vladimir? His strong sustain, farming capacity and AoE ultimate could make him a viable champ on 3v3, his 9-12 level dominance make him strong during this critical stage of the game. Not saying he is god tier, due to lack of mobility and early game issues, but I don't think he belongs into the everyone else tier.

      ReplyDelete
    29. ShadowSectJune 27, 2014

That would be true if it weren't for the fact that the meta for TT APCs is bursty as all hell.
Vladimir, while good, is probably Tier 2. He doesn't have as much burst as all of the other Tier 1 and God APCs, and he has many issues, namely the fact that there's no late game for him to really shine.
Also, he has little CC, much easier to kill when his w is on cooldown, he has a very weak early game, he's actually not one of the greatest duelists, and he has low range.
His win rate on Twisted Treeline is also REALLY bad across tiers:
      Bronze 44%, Silver 42%, Gold 45%.

      ReplyDelete
    30. ShadowSectJune 30, 2014

Just note to people who are starting to play on the Twisted Treeline in Ranked 3v3s, the meta of Twisted Treeline is NOT usually tailored around Bronze through Gold, and instead it's usually Diamond. I can't really explain why that is, but most tier lists before SSJ were based around Diamond matches or Diamond picks. Just note to the wise :D

nice tier list. I agree with most of your picks, that being said i find i very strange that i can't find fiddlesticks anywhere.
i play him alot on 3v3 ranked and i have alot of succes with him (with that i mean after every game opponents say "riot pls nerf fiddle's forever fear")
i think he deserves a spot in the tier 1 junglers

      ReplyDelete
    37. ShadowSectJuly 15, 2014

I agree, his surprise ganks or dueling potential if untapped can be extremely useful. He's not exactly a great jungler (referring to clear) on the TT, but Tier 1 for sure thanks to his potential.

      ReplyDelete
    38. ShadowSectJuly 16, 2014

Well specifically for this tier list, it may or may not change a lot or not at all, but let's look at each buff and nerf.
Ahri: That's a HUGE buff for the TT. Now Ahri has some counterplay when laning against common APCs like Syndra and Orianna.
Alistar: He may pop up more often and could be a possible Tier 2 Support, but other than that not much change here.
      Ezreal: Nothing will change.
      Garen: See Ezreal.
      Kassadin: See Ezreal.
Kha'Zix: His jungle got boosted, but he still belongs in Tier 1. Not much of a buff in my opinion.
Lucian: I actually see a huge amount of skilled E positioning with the tweak, and the reduced cost + more damage to minions on his Q will actually boost his early laning phase. The only reason why he won't change drastically though, is because he doesn't fit in the TT meta (AD ranged usually never does).
Essence Reaver: That's actually hurting the AD Ranged meta even more, with a later buy. Ouch.
Ardent Censer: Too much conjecture involved. I see more support burst, but I would have to play with the item more to know.
Manamune: No real change. Don't really know here.
Ichor changes: OUCH! Most Jaxes and Syndras take this a lot, and the boost is going to be a lot less now. I don't see a meta change, but games are going to get longer now.
SotAG: No idea. I don't see if often on TT anyway, so I wouldn't know.
Kayle changes: She was already being bested out of God currently. Not these changes are putting her square in Tier 2.
LVDP: Too much conjecture as well, though I think I'm going to see more AD tops using it.

But with the current nerfs on Nidalee Pure-Spear (which worked really nice in the foggy environment of TT), and the Nidalee Triforce/Gauntlet appearing, does Support / AP Nida still have a place in the game, mainly in TT?

What u think about Gragas top? Being ap/tank like lcs

      ReplyDelete
    41. ShadowSectJuly 29, 2014

Well a Nidalee support is actually pretty brilliant. Supplying some burst with a pretty good heal is fine. It could very well be Tier 1.
Braum and Leona definitely do it better (They are god), but Alistar is in no way a God support, and more like a Tier 1. Mana problems combined with a necessity for farm (plus the minion nerf) creates a lot of hurt if pushed behind (or focused for that matter).
Nidalee is definitely a Tier 2/Tier 3 as a mid though. Not enough burst to do the job.

      ReplyDelete
    42. ShadowSectJuly 29, 2014

That's not how the top lane in TT works. Almost always AD, and never faulters. Gragas would not work. LCS has nothing to do with this, it being solo queue.
Gragas would just get incinerated by Pantheons, Lucians, Rivens, and Renektons.

      ReplyDelete
    43. Wukong, Renekton, Kayle, and Jax are absolutely hands down god tier. Have you never played against a Jax or Wukong? -shudders-

      ReplyDelete
    44. ShadowSectJuly 29, 2014

Yes, I have. This is Twisted Treeline, not solo queue.
      Are you shattered yet?
Kayle and Jax are MOST DEFINITELY not God tier. What helped them in 5v5s is not here in 3v3s. Kayle actually suffers from mana problems (that's really weird), and Jax isn't solo anymore. There is no late game to shine and being shut down early game DOES stop him.
I agree with Renekton maybe, but even more so I disagree with Wukong. Easiest LANE EVER! He has no chance against 2 people, and like Jax, suffers extremely from a mediocre early game.
The main problem with your argument is that you have to realize there IS NO LATE GAME.

Nidalee top with a support works well with Trinity/Bork. She does great damage, roams easily, and is very hard to lock down and catch. She also only needs those two items and is free to become very tanky afterwards.

As for some really good picks that aren't banned commonly:
      Kha'Zix, Orianna, and Cassiopeia
Someone you should NEVER play on TT:

There's a Diamond 3s guy who wants to do it. He's a bit slow though so I might just update it...although I am currently working ~100 hour work weeks so my time is somewhat limited.
