Top Team Comps #3: Poke Comp

BACK by popular demand is...the Top Team Comp series!

Originally semi-scrapped due to lack of ideas, it's back with a vengeance!

Today's Top Team Comp is based on a very old strategy...THE POKE COMP, also known to some as the most annoying team composition in history. It's exactly what it sounds like, the objective of teamfights is to prolong them as long as possible while your team wittles them down slowly but surely. (Sometimes not so slowly)

Mid: Karthus
Top: AP Nidalee
Jungle: Malphite
AD Carry: Kog'Maw
Support: Soraka

STRENGTHS:
The major flaw of most poke comps in the past is the inability to fight off a fast engage by a team with gap closers, diminishing the power of the "poking" phase. To take full advantage of this team composition, try to fight in open spaces (mid) or somewhere that your team has good sight on the enemy team.

There are several substitutes to your AP Mid, and several substitutes to your AD carry with similar poking potential. Cassiopeia for example, has a stronger poke and Ashe will have a slow in addition to her poke.

However, Karthus allows your team to engage from a distance with his ult, as well as stop enemy engages with his wall. The AD carry is a matter of preference, I just find Kog to have the most annoying poke.

The reason for Malphite in the line-up despite his lack of good poke is to combat early engages. After being smashed by spear after spear and countless piles of bile, before they know it they'll all be far too low to even think about engaging and simply give up towers.

WEAKNESSES:
As a poke comp, this team composition relies heavily on landing skillshots. Nidalee's spears will be the hardest hitting skillshot in your arsenal, and will definitely be a good signal for when to engage with your team. This team is heavily AP reliant though, so against a strong engaging team with lots of Magic Resist, it may turn sour very quickly (See: Galio)

Another major flaw in this strategy is the lack of good positions available to fight in and the need to maintain good map control. Since the team is composed of many squishies and has no real peel, this composition is also dependent on the enemy team simply being very scared of standing in Karthus defile.

A team such as this one would also be a direct counter, and likely make this sort of team cry in their sleep.

  1. I feel Gragas or Cassiopeia would be a higher skill cap alternative to Karthus that could work even better Karthus and a huge counter to Poke Comps would be healers since the damage can healed right back after the damage is dealt, and possibly Janna if she has lightning fast fingers

  2. That's a good point, Gragas does have very good poke and a good engage/disengage mechanism! Like you said though, he's also got a higher skillcap and a much smaller margin for error.

  3. What about nunu/kog? if they already pick their support it would be nice because nunu kog botlane is so strong, and even in teamfight it rules

  4. jayce top, nidalee mid, kogmaw sona bot. while sona doesnt have the poke needed for this comp, she has amazing counterengage. Mundo jungle with spell pen reds has pretty good poke too, and its readily available
