VAN STATUS_SB_POLICY: reset your Secure Boot keys

The message

VAN: STATUS_SB_POLICY. The secure boot policy on this device could not be verified. Please ensure the secure boot database is set to factory default settings.

What it means

Vanguard found a problem with how Secure Boot is set up on your PC, even though Secure Boot itself may be on.

What to try first

Reset the Secure Boot keys to factory defaults in the BIOS. If you use BitLocker, suspend it or have the recovery key ready before you do.

Is it you or Riot? If lots of players are hitting this at once, it's probably the servers. Check League server status before you start reinstalling things.

Secure Boot can be on and still fail this

With this code, Secure Boot being switched off isn't the issue Riot has in mind. Riot tells you to reset the keys even when Secure Boot already shows as enabled, and the message itself asks for the Secure Boot database to be at factory defaults. So msinfo32 saying Secure Boot State: On tells you nothing here.

That's what separates it from its neighbors. VAN: RESTRICTION: 1 and RESTRICTION: 4 are verification failures where the first move is switching Secure Boot on. STATUS_SB_POLICY skips that and goes straight to the keys.

Before you touch the keys: BitLocker

Riot's Secure Boot guide carries a warning the error article leaves out. If BitLocker encrypts your drive, resetting the Secure Boot keys changes the TPM measurements BitLocker relies on, and the next boot drops you into BitLocker recovery. Without the recovery key you're locked out of Windows.

So do one of these first: suspend BitLocker (Control Panel, BitLocker Drive Encryption, Suspend protection), or find your recovery key and have it somewhere that isn't this PC.

Riot's fix, in Riot's order

  1. Reset Secure Boot keys to factory defaults

    Riot's fix is to reset the Secure Boot keys, even when Secure Boot already shows as on. The option lives in the BIOS's Secure Boot section, usually named something like Restore Factory Keys or Install default Secure Boot keys. Save and restart.

Where to look: Riot's guide puts the option under the BIOS's Security or Boot tab, often inside a section called Key Management. Some boards call it Reset to Setup Mode rather than restoring keys. After the default keys go in, go back and make sure Secure Boot itself is set to Enabled before you save.
