VAN RESTRICTION 4: Vanguard couldn't verify your Secure Boot setup

The message

VAN: RESTRICTION: 4 - Secure Boot verification failure.

What it means

Secure Boot is part of the startup trust check Vanguard runs before the game can open, and your PC didn't pass it.

What to try first

Run msinfo32 and look for BIOS Mode: UEFI and Secure Boot State: On. If Secure Boot is off, switch it on in the BIOS.

Is it you or Riot? If lots of players are hitting this at once, it's probably the servers. Check League server status before you start reinstalling things.

Check the number on your message

Riot has two restriction codes about Secure Boot. This one, with the 4, reads "Secure Boot verification failure". RESTRICTION: 1 says "UEFI Secure Boot verification failure" and comes with an extra BIOS step. A message with no number at all is the plain VAN: RESTRICTION, and 3 and 5 are about the install drive and Memory Integrity.

Riot's shortest restriction article

RESTRICTION: 4 has a single fix: turn on Secure Boot, restart, launch. It's also the newest of the five (Riot last updated it on July 20, 2026), and it's the only one missing from the list of restriction errors on Riot's Vanguard security requirements page, which links the plain restriction, 1, 3 and 5.

When Secure Boot already says On

The article stops at "enable it". Riot's Secure Boot guide goes further, and that's where you need to look if msinfo32 already shows Secure Boot State: On:

  • Old firmware. A BIOS that has fallen behind can show Secure Boot as on while failing the policy checks Vanguard needs. The guide's answer is to update the BIOS for your exact motherboard model.
  • Bad keys. If the Secure Boot option is grayed out or refuses to enable, the guide blames corrupted or outdated keys and has you restore the factory keys. That's the fix on the VAN: STATUS_SB_POLICY page, BitLocker warning included.

If none of that clears it, Riot's last word on this code is a Player Support ticket with your logs attached.

Riot's fix, in Riot's order

  1. Turn on Secure Boot

    Run msinfo32. You want BIOS Mode: UEFI and Secure Boot State: On. UEFI with Secure Boot off means flipping one switch in the BIOS.

    If BIOS Mode says Legacy, stop. Your Windows drive has to be converted from MBR to GPT before you switch the BIOS to UEFI, or Windows won't boot at all. Riot's Secure Boot guide covers the conversion and its requirements (64-bit Windows 10 1703 or newer, BitLocker off, no dual boot).
