How to Beat Cassiopeia

Matchup Guide · Evergreen · 3 Counter Picks

Cassiopeia doesn't have a burst combo. She has a button she never stops pressing, and there's no point in the fight where you're safe from it.

Most mages kill you in a window. Miss the window and they're harmless for eight seconds. She doesn't work like that, because the damage is a rate, and the rest of the kit is about denying you the ways people normally leave. She's faster than she should be, she can't be outrun, and if you're standing in the wrong place when the fight starts she has a spell that makes leaving illegal. If you want a sense of the company she keeps, the solo queue tier list is the page to check.

Cassiopeia Overview

Strengths: What Makes Her Dangerous

  • The damage never has a gap. Twin Fang [E] comes back almost immediately against a poisoned target, so what looks like chip damage is actually a continuous stream that scales with how long you stay in front of her.
  • She takes the escape away. Miasma [W] grounds anything inside it (dashes, blinks and Flash all stop working), and it's very often placed on the ground you were already planning to leave through.
  • She isn't slow. Serpentine Grace [Passive] hands her movement speed for free, and Noxious Blast [Q] gives her more of it for hitting you. She wins the walking contest against most of the champions built to chase her.
  • The ultimate punishes an instinct. Petrifying Gaze [R] stuns everyone facing her, and the natural reaction to an assassin's opening is to turn and look at them.
  • She scales without needing to fight. A Cassiopeia who has done nothing all game is still the champion whose damage doesn't run out in the fight that decides it.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • Her range is short for a mage. Nothing in the kit reaches far, so anybody willing to sit outside that band can farm the lane without ever being in the matchup.
  • She has no way of reaching you. There's no dash and no gap closer. If a fight is happening somewhere she isn't, she can't make it happen anywhere else.
  • The early game is genuinely poor. The damage rate needs items and levels before it's frightening, and the first few minutes are a mage with a short-range poison and a lot of mana problems.
  • She needs you standing still. Her engine is a poison that has to be reapplied, so a target moving unpredictably is a target she's doing much less to.
  • The ultimate is answerable. It only stuns what's facing her, and everything else in her kit stops being scary the moment somebody who can survive the stun is standing on top of her.

Countering Cassiopeia

Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Cassiopeia comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:

  • Beat the grounding by not needing it. Plan the escape as a walk rather than as a dash, because the dash is the thing she's most likely to have already taken away.
  • Bring something that answers the stun. A spell shield, a tenacity item or a shield on the front-line target turns her ultimate from a fight-ender into a spell she spent.
  • Play outside her band. She has no answer at all to a champion who refuses to come inside a short range, and the lane simply stops happening.
  • Punish the first six levels. This is the window, and it's a long one. She's at her weakest exactly when most people are still respecting her (usually from the last game they lost to her).

If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:

Playing a Bad Cassiopeia Matchup

Turn away from her when the ultimate comes out. Granted, it reads as cowardice, but it's the correct play, since the spell checks which way you're facing rather than where you're standing.

Don't path through the poison cloud because it's the shorter route. That's exactly why it was put there, and the seconds you spend grounded inside it are worth more to her than the damage is.

Give up the wave rather than the position. She wants a long lane phase in a small space, and a player who farms under turret and waits for a jungler is playing the matchup correctly rather than badly.

Best Cassiopeia Counters

Refuse the stun, block the stream, or stand somewhere she can't reach.

Malzahar champion icon

Malzahar His Shield Declines The Opener

Void Shift [Passive] eats the next thing that lands on him, which in this matchup is usually the ultimate. Losing that spell costs her the fight, because everything after it assumed you'd be standing still for it.

He also wins the part of the lane she needs to win. His waveclear is instant and hers isn't, so the shove she relies on to keep him pinned never really arrives.

Xerath champion icon

Xerath Sits Outside The Matchup

Her damage is a rate applied to whoever is close enough to receive it, and he's never close enough. He can farm and poke from a distance that no part of her kit answers.

There's nothing she can do about it, either. No dash, no gap closer, and a grounding zone is worthless against somebody who wasn't planning to walk anywhere in the first place.

Pantheon champion icon

Pantheon Blocks The Stream

Aegis Assault [E] is a wall pointed at one direction for a few seconds (an unusually exact answer to a champion whose damage arrives continuously from one direction). She spends the fight filling a shield.

His early game does the rest. Hers is the weakest part of her champion and his is the strongest part of his, and a lane that is decided before either of them has items is a lane she was never going to win.

Itemizing Against Cassiopeia

Her output is entirely magic and the crowd control is what makes it land, so the buys point at both halves:

Mercury's TreadsNull-Magic MantleBanshee's VeilMaw of Malmortius

Mercury's Treads is the first thing to buy, because the seconds you spend stunned in front of her are what convert her damage rate into a kill. A Null-Magic Mantle on its own often ends the lane phase version of this matchup and it costs very little, which matters against a champion whose early game you're trying to survive rather than beat. Banshee's Veil is the full answer later, since her sequence needs one spell to land before the rest of it is worth anything, and a shield that eats the ultimate costs her the whole fight. Maw of Malmortius is the version of that for anybody building attack damage, and the shield it hands out arrives at exactly the moment her stream has been running longest.
