How to Beat Viego
Viego doesn't get punished for losing a fight. He gets paid for it, because the first body on the floor is the second champion he gets to play.
Every other champion in the game gets stronger by killing you. He gets a full health bar, a fresh set of cooldowns and somebody else's kit (all in the same instant), and the fight your team thought it had won is now against a different champion at full strength. Countering him means making sure there's never a corpse standing near him for the two seconds he needs.
- Anti-heal, because the reset is a heal and the heal is the whole champion
- Crowd control long enough to burn the window rather than interrupt it
- Ideally something that answers dashes (almost every way he enters or leaves a fight is one)

Viego Overview
Strengths: What Makes Him Dangerous
- The reset is a whole new fight. Full health, fresh cooldowns and someone else's abilities add up to a second champion arriving mid-teamfight.
- He picks the weakest person left. His finisher goes to whoever's lowest rather than whoever's closest, so hiding at the back isn't the protection it usually is.
- He travels through the walls of a fight. His mist turns terrain into a road, and the flank you thought was covered was covered against people who walk.
- He duels almost anyone early. The sustain in his basic pattern means an even trade in the jungle isn't even, and invades that should punish a jungler frequently don't.
- One death snowballs into three. The reset means a fight that goes slightly wrong goes completely wrong, which is why he looks unbeatable in games he's ahead in.
Weaknesses: Where You Get In
- Anti-heal isn't optional and it works. Sovereign's Domination [Passive] hands him health back as its main reward, and the item that cuts it turns the reset into a nuisance rather than a reversal.
- The possession runs on a timer. Lock him down during it and it expires while he's standing still, which costs him the entire benefit of the kill.
- His opener is slow. Spectral Maw [W] takes time to charge, points where he aimed it, and is the one part of his kit that a player who's watching can simply step out of.
- He's fragile without the reset. Take one fight where nobody on your side dies and he's an ordinary bruiser with a health bar he can't refill.
- Everything is a dash. That's mobility until somebody brings the answer to dashes, and then it's a liability twice a fight.
Countering Viego
Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Viego comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:
- Buy anti-heal in the jungle, before the teamfight. It's the cheapest item that changes a matchup this much and almost nobody buys it before the third death.
- Don't die alone near him. A death he can't reach is worth a fraction of a death he can, so the fight you disengage from badly is still better than the one you fed him.
- Save your longest crowd control for the possession. Interrupting him at the start of a fight is worth less than freezing him during the part that's on a clock.
- Respect the charge more than the dash. The opener is visible and slow. Almost everyone reacts to it late because they're watching his position instead of his cast.
If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:
Playing a Bad Viego Matchup
Group. He's at his best against people standing on their own in a side lane, and at his worst against five people who all have a button left.
Ward the walls rather than the entrances, because the mist is how he gets to places he shouldn't be able to reach.
Take objectives when he's just used his ultimate. It's the one stretch of the game where a fight against him is a fight against one champion.
Best Viego Counters
Three ways to beat a champion who gets rewarded for kills that aren't his: shut off the movement, win before he has a reset, or make the reset expire while he watches. One counter each.

Poppy Turns Off The Dashes
She's the specific answer rather than a general one. Almost every way he starts a fight, crosses one or leaves one is a dash, and she has the tool that simply refuses them.
She also survives being the target, which matters because the plan against him is to be the person he can't get value out of killing.

Olaf Wins Before The Reset Exists
He beats him in the jungle early and can't be stopped from doing it, which removes the snowball before it has anything to roll down. There's no clever interaction here, just a duel Viego loses when neither of them has items.

Lissandra Makes The Window Expire
Her lockdown lands whether or not she read the fight correctly, and it lasts long enough to spend the possession rather than pause it. A reset that ends while he's frozen in place has cost his team a kill for nothing.
She's the pick that scales with how badly your team is playing, which is an odd compliment and an accurate one in this matchup.
Itemizing Against Viego
The first two are the matchup and the last two are ordinary insurance:

Executioner's Calling and Morellonomicon are the same purchase for the two halves of the roster, and one of you has to make it in the first fifteen minutes rather than after the game has already turned. Plated Steelcaps handles the basic attacks that carry most of his damage between abilities. Randuin's Omen is the teamfight version of the same idea, and it's aimed at the moment after the reset (when he's at full health and looking for a second kill).
