Counter Guide
How to Beat Karthus
Killing Karthus isn't the same as stopping Karthus. He gets a few more seconds either way, and he usually spends them on you.
Every other champion has a moment where the fight is over for them. He doesn't. He keeps casting after he dies, he finishes people from the other side of the map, and there's no distance you can put between yourself and the last thing he does. Losing to him feels less like being outplayed and more like being billed, and that's a fair reaction. The counterplay is real, but it's almost entirely about the timing of when you fight him rather than about how well you fight him, and the solo queue tier list shows the company he keeps.
- A way to reach him during a three second channel
- Something that answers damage you can't dodge
- The discipline to back off at low health

Karthus Overview
Strengths: What Makes Him Dangerous
- He doesn't stop when he dies. Death Defied [Passive] gives him several more seconds of full casting, which is usually enough for the ultimate and often enough for the fight.
- His damage has no cooldown. Lay Waste [Q] can be thrown continuously, and it hits harder when it catches one target alone, so backing away from a fight isn't the escape it looks like.
- He finishes people anywhere on the map. Requiem [R] doesn't care where you are, what you're doing or whether you were even in the fight, and it's at its deadliest in exactly the moment you thought you had survived.
- He punishes you for walking. Wall of Pain [W] slows what crosses it and shreds magic resistance at the same time, so the retreat through it costs more than the fight did.
- He scales alone. He needs farm and levels and very little else, and a Karthus who's been ignored for fifteen minutes is the strongest thing in the game.
Weaknesses: Where You Get In
- He can't move. No dash, no blink, no escape. Every part of this guide eventually comes back to that.
- The ultimate takes three seconds and announces itself. He has to stand still for it, and anything that interrupts him or kills him fast enough during the channel takes the whole spell away.
- The early game is genuinely poor. His damage is a rate that needs items, and before he has them he's a slow mage with no way of defending himself.
- His damage is entirely magic. One resistance item makes a much bigger difference here than it does against most champions (there's nothing else in the kit to fall back on).
- He needs you to stay low. A team that backs out at half health rather than pushing for one more play removes most of the value from the spell he was saving.
Countering Karthus
Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Karthus comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:
- Interrupt or burst the channel. Three seconds is a long time. Anything that reaches him, silences him or simply kills him during it deletes the spell.
- Don't walk out through the wall. It's placed on your escape route on purpose, and the magic resistance it takes off is what makes the damage that follows lethal.
- Buy magic resistance early. His output is one damage type with no second option, so the first item is worth more here than almost anywhere else.
- Recall at low health, even when it feels wasteful. The global finisher is a decision he gets to make about you, and the only way to take it away is to not be killable when he makes it.
If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:
Playing a Bad Karthus Matchup
Assume he's alive for a few seconds after you kill him, and keep moving accordingly. Standing on his corpse to celebrate is, weirdly, how most of his damage gets dealt.
Fight him where his wall doesn't help. He wants a corridor and a chokepoint, and an open fight where nobody has to cross a line is a much worse one for him.
Watch his ultimate cooldown rather than his health bar. The window where he doesn't have it is the only window where being at low health across the map is safe.
Best Karthus Counters
Reach him during the channel, take the finisher off the target, or ignore the damage type entirely.

Nocturne Arrives Before The Channel Ends
Three seconds of standing still is an eternity against a champion whose ultimate is a targeted dash from anywhere on the map. Paranoia [R] turns the safest spell in Karthus' kit into the moment he's most reachable.
Shroud of Darkness [W] handles the rest. A spell shield sitting on a champion whose only defensive tool is a wall means the escape route stays open and the trade goes one way.

Kayle Turns The Global Off
Divine Judgment [R] is the cleanest answer in the game to a spell that kills people who are already out of the fight. The ultimate lands on somebody who can't be damaged by it and the play is wasted.
She also wins the part of the game he wants. Both of them are asking to be left alone until late, and she's the one who can protect the rest of the team while she gets there.

Kassadin Wrong Damage Type, Then Arrives
His passive reduces the magic damage coming in (all of it, against Karthus), so the poke that would grind anybody else out of the lane barely registers.
Then the blink solves the other half. Karthus has no answer to a champion who can be standing next to him whenever he chooses, and no way of leaving once that has happened.
Itemizing Against Karthus
Everything he does is magic damage, and the parts you can't dodge are the parts to buy for:

Mercury's Treads is the first buy for anybody who keeps getting caught behind the wall (the slow is what turns a survivable amount of poke into a death). A Negatron Cloak on its own often decides the lane phase and it costs very little, which matters against a champion you're trying to outlast rather than out-trade. Kaenic Rookern is the full version of that later (magic resistance with a spell shield on top), and it's a real answer to a champion who has to land the first thing he throws. Zhonya's Hourglass is the specific one: the stasis is one of the few ways to be standing in the open at low health when his ultimate resolves and still be there afterwards.
