How to Beat Senna

Matchup Guide · Evergreen · 3 Counter Picks

Senna doesn't have to beat you in lane. She just has to hit you from somewhere you can't reach, over and over, until the lane is already lost.

She's a support who out-ranges most bot lanes at level one and keeps growing, and the range advantage never goes away on its own. Being poked down by a champion you can't walk up to is a legitimately miserable way to lose a lane, and trying to win the poke war won't fix it. Thankfully, everything she does is telegraphed, slow, and comes from a champion with no dash. Her whole game is built on distance, and there are three very different ways to take that distance away from her.

What a Counter Needs
  • A way to close 1000 units without asking her permission
  • An answer to Last Embrace [W], because it's her only lockdown
  • Enough burst to end the fight before she can back away again

Senna Overview

Strengths: What Makes Her Dangerous

  • Absolution [Passive] lets her collect Mist from dying units and turn it into permanent attack damage, attack range and critical strike chance. The lane she's playing in the twentieth minute isn't the lane she started.
  • Piercing Darkness [Q] heals every ally it passes through and damages every enemy in the same beam. It's a poke tool and a sustain tool in one button, and it can be cast through a minion or an ally to reach far past its listed 600 range.
  • Standing next to your marksman turns a single hit into a double one. Last Embrace [W] roots from 1250 units and then spreads to everything near whoever it caught.
  • Dawning Shadow [R] is global, so she shields her whole team through a fight on the other side of the map without ever being in danger herself.
  • She scales like a carry from the support slot. Souls don't care how the lane went, so falling behind slows her down without ever really stopping her.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • She has no dash and no blink. Curse of the Black Mist [E] is only a camouflage, and it doesn't move her out of anything already landing.
  • Last Embrace [W] roots after a delay, so the mist is visible before the root applies. That delay is the entire window in which you can walk out of it.
  • Her attacks are slow on purpose. Her Relic Cannon takes longer to fire than a normal attack, so a fight she can't control from range goes badly quickly.
  • Curse of the Black Mist [E] has a long early cooldown (26 seconds at rank 1). Once it's down she has nothing defensive at all.
  • Her damage is physical. Armor and boots that reduce auto attack damage cut directly into the thing she's trying to do to you.

Countering Senna

Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Senna comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:

  • Close the gap without her consent. Point and click engage, or an engage she can't body block, beats every poke pattern she has.
  • Punish her position once. She has no escape, so a single successful pick usually ends the trade outright.
  • Take Last Embrace [W] off the table. Block the root, cleanse it, or simply stand apart from your ADC so it can only ever catch one of you.
  • Build armor early. All of her lane damage is physical, so defensive itemization is a real stat check rather than a soft one.

If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:

Playing a Bad Senna Matchup

Stop standing next to your ADC. Last Embrace [W] roots everything near whoever it hits, so two people in one place is the setup she's waiting for. Spread out and the same ability catches half as much.

Don't try to trade at her range. You'll lose that exchange every time, and Piercing Darkness [Q] heals her partner while it happens. Trade when she has walked forward to collect a soul instead.

Watch her souls. She has to attack them to absorb them, and attacking a soul is a moment where she isn't attacking you and not holding position. That's the cleanest recurring window in the lane.

Count Curse of the Black Mist [E]. Once the camouflage is on cooldown she has no way to break line of sight and no way to leave, and that cooldown is 26 seconds at rank 1.

Best Senna Counters

These three champions beat Senna in three genuinely different ways, so pick the one that fits how you already like to play rather than the one with the shiniest win rate.

Leona champion icon

Leona Engages Through the Poke

Leona is the hardest matchup on Senna's sheet because none of Senna's tools answer the question Leona asks. Zenith Blade [E] is a long targeted dash that finishes on top of whoever it catches, and Shield of Daybreak [Q] stuns them the moment she arrives. There's no skillshot to sidestep and no projectile to body block.

Once Leona is on top of her, Senna has a camouflage and nothing else. Eclipse [W] absorbs the return damage during the exact seconds Leona needs, and Solar Flare [R] covers the retreat or the follow up. The whole lane becomes a question of whether Leona can walk 900 units, and Senna has no way to make the answer no.

Blitzcrank champion icon

Blitzcrank Punishes Her Position

Senna wants to stand at the far edge of the lane and hold that spot for twenty minutes. Rocket Grab [Q] makes standing anywhere predictable a losing habit. She has no dash to break the grab's path and no way to reposition once it's traveling, so the only defense she has is the camouflage, and that's on a long cooldown early (26 seconds at rank 1).

The follow up matters as much as the grab. Power Fist [E] knocks her up, Static Field [R] silences and damages, and a support with no escape doesn't survive that sequence at bot lane health totals. Even a missed grab wins ground, because it pushes her further back than she wants to stand to farm her souls.

Vel'Koz champion icon

Vel'Koz Punishes Her Standing Still

Senna's basic attacks start at 600 range, and she builds her Mist stacks by staying in lane and taking shots. Plasma Fission [Q] and Void Rift [W] both reach 1100 units, so every auto she wants to throw gets thrown from inside Vel'Koz's range.

She has no dash, and that's what makes the combo work. Tectonic Disruption [E] knocks her up and stuns her, and every third ability hit adds true damage through Organic Deconstruction [Passive]. This is the pick for players who'd rather out-poke her than walk at her.

Itemizing Against Senna

Senna's lane damage is physical and a lot of it arrives as auto attacks, and her partner is being healed by every Piercing Darkness [Q] that passes through them. These four are the ones worth prioritizing:

Plated Steelcaps Executioner's Calling Oblivion Orb Quicksilver Sash

Plated Steelcaps cuts the auto attacks that carry most of her lane pressure. Executioner's Calling and Oblivion Orb are the cheap physical and magic ways to apply Grievous Wounds (the effect that stops Piercing Darkness [Q] from undoing every trade you win). Quicksilver Sash removes Last Embrace [W] outright, which matters most for whichever member of your team her whole engage is aimed at.
