How to Beat Alistar
Alistar doesn't need to kill you. He needs to put you somewhere, and he's very good at that.
He's a support with no ranged threat, no poke, and no way to hurt anyone from a distance, which makes him look harmless right up to the moment he isn't. Everything he does is one sequence, and the sequence takes you out of your own lane and into his. The counterplay is spatial rather than mechanical. Know how far he can reach, understand that his reach includes a shove as well as a step, and the champion becomes a large cow standing in a bush with nothing to do.
- Range, or a reason he can never close
- Something that stops the first part of the sequence
- Healing reduction, because he gets health back for free

Alistar Overview
Strengths: What Makes Him Dangerous
- The combo reaches further than it looks. He can step to you and then push you back toward his own team in one motion, so the safe distance is a lot further out than the range on any single ability suggests.
- He's close to unkillable when it matters. Unbreakable Will [R] means a dive that should have gone badly for him usually doesn't, and towers are much less of a deterrent than they'd normally be.
- He peels as well as he engages. The same buttons that start a fight also end one. A team that dives his carry is finding out about that at the worst possible moment.
- He heals himself back into the lane. Passive sustain means poke wars against him are slower than they look, and the health you took at four minutes may not be there at six.
Weaknesses: Where You Get In
- He can't do anything from range. Nothing at all. A bot lane that never lets him get within a step of them has beaten him without doing anything clever.
- The engage is telegraphed. He has to physically walk at you. There's no dash from off screen, so what you get is a large champion getting closer, and that is enough.
- Without the ultimate he's fragile. The gap between the state where he's unkillable and the state where he's a squishy melee support is one cooldown long, and it's a long cooldown.
- Mana runs out fast. The full sequence is expensive and he doesn't get to use it many times before he's out, which means the fifth minute of a lane is very different from the first.
- He does almost no damage late. A kill on his side of the fight requires somebody else to provide the actual killing, so a fight where his carry is dead or absent is one he cannot win alone.
Countering Alistar
Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Alistar comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:
- Respect the shove, not just the step. Almost every death to him comes from measuring only the first half of the sequence. Add the second half to your mental range indicator and the lane changes.
- Have a shield or a spell block ready. Stopping the opening piece stops all of it, because the rest of the combo depends on it landing first.
- Punish the mana. Making him use the sequence and survive it is a win. Two of those and he's a melee support who can't press anything.
- Buy healing reduction rather than more health. The sustain is passive and constant, which makes it exactly the kind of thing a cheap item shuts off completely.
If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:
Playing a Bad Alistar Matchup
Stand behind the wave and take the CS you can reach rather than the CS you'd like. He needs a straight line to you, and minions are a genuinely effective wall against a champion with no ranged option.
Track his ultimate, not his health. He's a completely different champion with it and without it, and the version without it can be killed by two people walking forward.
Ping the bush before you take the objective. Almost every good thing he does starts from somewhere nobody looked, and the check costs a second.
Best Alistar Counters
Stop the first part, out damage a support who has to walk, or simply undo the whole thing after it lands.

Morgana Blocks The Opener
A shield on the target he's aiming at eats the piece of the sequence everything else depends on, and the rest of the combo has nowhere to go.
She also punishes him for the walk. A melee support crossing open ground toward a root is not having a good time.

Zyra Out Damages The Walk
She turns the ground between him and her into something expensive to cross, and he has no way to answer that except crossing it anyway.
The trade math is brutal in a lane where one support does real damage from range and the other has to be adjacent to matter at all.

Janna Undoes It
Everything he does is displacement, and she's the champion built specifically to reverse displacement, so his best sequence ends with him back where he started.
The speed matters too. She can simply leave the range he needs, over and over, and there's no version of his kit that catches somebody moving faster than him.
Itemizing Against Alistar
The first two answer what he actually does; the last two are for the moment the sequence lands anyway:

Executioner's Calling is cheap and it's aimed at the part of him people don't think to build against, which is the constant free health that makes the poke lane against him so much slower than it should be. Mercury's Treads is here because none of his damage matters and all of his crowd control does, and cutting the duration of the sequence is what turns a death into an escape. A Control Ward covers the approach, since he's almost always starting from somewhere unlit rather than from the lane itself. Zhonya's Hourglass belongs on whoever he's most likely to displace into his own team, and pressing it after the shove rather than before it is the correct order.
