How to Beat Kai'Sa
Kai'Sa is two different champions and you do not get to choose which one shows up. The one that scares you is decided by what she bought.
Most marksmen tell you what they are during champion select. She does not. The same portrait can end up as a long range poke threat, a burst caster who deletes you from off screen, or a short range attacker who dives your back line and leaves. What never changes is the shape of the game she wants: survive a weak start, reach the point where her stacks do the work, and then get into the fight rather than sit behind it. Countering her means attacking one of those three stages, and the earliest one is by far the cheapest.
- Range, or enough burst to punish the moment she lands
- A way to win the first six levels, which are the worst six of her game
- Something that answers the arrival rather than the approach

Kai'Sa Overview
Strengths: What Makes Her Dangerous
- Her damage builds itself. Second Skin [Passive] pays her for hitting the same target repeatedly, so a fight that lasts one second longer than she deserved is one she wins.
- She fits herself to your team. The same player can end up shredding a five stack of tanks or bursting a squishy line, and you find out which after the item is already bought.
- She joins the fight instead of watching it. Her ultimate is not an escape. It is a way of appearing next to the person you were protecting, with a shield already up.
- She is safe once she is ahead. The build that scales hardest also gives her the tools to survive the fights that would punish a normal marksman for the same positioning.
- Objectives fall fast around her. Sustained damage on a single large target is her best case, and the game hands her one every few minutes.
Weaknesses: Where You Get In
- The first six levels are miserable for her. She is short ranged, has no escape, and needs to walk forward to do anything at all. Every strong early bot lane beats her here and most of them do not realize it.
- She has to touch you three times. Her damage is back loaded onto a target she has already hit. Break contact and the fight resets to her worst version.
- The arrival is a commitment. Killer Instinct [R] puts her inside your team on purpose. If the shield does not hold, she has spent the only escape she owns getting into the place she cannot leave.
- Her build locks in. Whatever she committed to is what she has. A team that adjusts after seeing it is fighting a champion who cannot adjust back.
- She needs her lane partner. She is one of the few marksmen who genuinely cannot cover for a support that is behind, because she has no way to make distance on her own.
Countering Kai'Sa
Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Kai'Sa comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:
- Fight her before level six. This is the entire counter to her and everyone skips it. The window where she is a short ranged attacker with no escape is not short, it is a third of the game.
- Break contact instead of trading longer. Walking away resets the stacking. Standing there to finish the trade is exactly what she is being paid for.
- Hold one piece of crowd control for the landing, not the approach. She chooses when she arrives, which means you know roughly where she will be. Nobody can dodge the arrival, but everybody can answer it.
- Take the objective when her ultimate is down. It is the only stretch of the game where she has to fight from where a normal marksman stands.
If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:
Playing a Bad Kai'Sa Matchup
Shove and give up the trades. A lane she cannot punish is a lane she does not scale from, and a pushed wave denies her the safe farm her whole plan is built on.
Stand where the arrival is bad for her. She lands next to your carry, so anything that makes that spot crowded costs her the fight before it starts.
Buy the defensive item early rather than the fourth damage item late. Her damage grows every time she connects, so the fight you shorten is worth more than the one you win harder.
Best Kai'Sa Counters
Three ways to beat someone whose game plan is to survive until she is unfair: outrange her, kill her while she is still weak, or refuse the arrival. One counter each.

Jinx Out-Ranges Her
Switcheroo! [Q] puts Jinx on rockets with extra range from the first level, and Kai'Sa has nothing early that closes the gap except walking into them. The trades happen on Jinx's terms long before either build is finished.
Flame Chompers! [E] handle the arrival later. Killer Instinct [R] drops Kai'Sa right next to her target, and Chompers thrown at Jinx's own feet root whoever lands on them.

Nilah Punishes The Weak Window
Nilah wants the fight at melee range from level one, and Kai'Sa has no crowd control to keep her out. Two charges of Slipstream [E] get her in, and the lane turns into a brawl Kai'Sa never agreed to.
Jubilant Veil [W] is the part that hurts. For a couple of seconds Nilah dodges every basic attack and takes less magic damage, and Kai'Sa's lane damage leans on exactly those two things. Most of her trade just doesn't land.

Braum Refuses The Arrival
His shield sits between her and the person she came for, and he survives being the one she lands on, which is exactly what countering her at range can't do.
He turns a dive into a mistake without needing to out damage anybody, which is the version of this matchup a losing team can still play.
Itemizing Against Kai'Sa
The first two are the matchup and the last two are ordinary insurance:

Plated Steelcaps and Randuin's Omen both attack the same thing, which is the number of times she gets to connect before the fight ends. Zhonya's Hourglass is the answer for the half of the roster she comes looking for, because the arrival has a fixed duration and so does the item. Guardian Angel is the blunt version of the same plan, and it is aimed at the fight where she gets exactly what she wanted and it still is not enough.
