How to Beat Corki

Matchup Guide · Evergreen · 3 Counter Picks

Corki is a marksman who does magic damage, so half the team bought the wrong item before the first fight even happened.

He's two champions stacked on top of each other. Before his big item arrives he's a poke marksman with a mediocre early game and no way of surviving anybody who walks at him. Afterward he's among the most flexible sources of damage in the game, hitting for a mixture nobody itemizes cleanly and doing it from a range that doesn't require him to be in the fight. The transition isn't gradual and it isn't secret. There's a moment when he becomes the second champion, and what your team did with the time before it decides the matchup.

Corki Overview

Strengths: What Makes Him Dangerous

  • Nobody itemizes correctly against him. The damage is split, so armor is half wasted and magic resist is half wasted, and the answer is health (which most carries don't want to buy).
  • He fights without being in the fight. Missile Barrage [R] comes off a stack, so his contribution to a siege is constant and arrives from a place nothing is going to reach.
  • Special Delivery [Passive] turns a map into a shortcut. The package gives him a long escape or an engage nobody expected, and it comes back on a schedule.
  • He's very good at holding ground. A team that wants to sit around a turret with him is a team that's difficult to approach and expensive to wait out.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • The early game is genuinely poor. Before his item he has no burst, no sustain and no way of winning a straight fight, so the first ten minutes are the window everything else depends on.
  • He has one dash and it isn't fast. Spent, he's an immobile marksman standing in the open (with a long wait ahead of him), and it's very obvious when that has happened.
  • The package is on a timer you can see. It announces itself, it lands somewhere specific, and a team that watches for it takes away his single best escape.
  • He has to walk forward to do damage. Only a bit, and a bit is far enough. The poke isn't free and the place he has to stand to deliver it is a place somebody can reach.
  • Mana runs out. The constant firing is expensive and a lane that forces him to use it defensively is a lane where he has nothing left for the fight that mattered.

Countering Corki

Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Corki comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:

  • Fight before his item. The matchup runs on a schedule. Every minute of pressure early is a minute the second version of him doesn't exist.
  • Track the package. It is his escape and it is on a visible timer. Engaging while it is unavailable is a completely different fight from engaging while it is up.
  • Bring something that blocks a projectile. His poke arrives as missiles, and a team with one way of deleting them is a team that can approach the ground he was holding.
  • Buy health rather than one resistance. His damage is split on purpose. The item that answers half of it is worth much less than it looks on the shop screen.

If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:

Playing a Bad Corki Matchup

Push the wave at him early rather than trading with him. He's bad at defending a shoved lane and worse at farming under a tower, and denying the gold is denying the item that changes the game.

Watch where he is standing when he starts firing. The poke has a range and he has to be inside it, so he's telling you where he'll be for the next few seconds.

When the dash is gone, go. That window is the only reliable one in the matchup and it doesn't last, and waiting for a better one usually means waiting until it's back.

Best Corki Counters

Beat him early, stop the missiles, or reach him during the long stretch where he can't leave.

Lucian champion icon

Lucian Beats The Early Window

He's strongest exactly where Corki is weakest, and the lane is decided long before the item that would have changed it.

He also has the mobility to be the one making the decisions. Every trade happens when Lucian wants it, and refusing a trade isn't something an immobile marksman gets to do well.

Nautilus champion icon

Nautilus Reaches Him

The hook is the cleanest punishment available for a champion with a single long cooldown escape, and it doesn't stop working later in the game.

The chain of crowd control that follows is the other half. Corki survives being reached by leaving, and there's nothing to leave with once the sequence has started.

Braum champion icon

Braum Eats The Missiles

His shield stops the poke outright, so a siege turns from something to be endured into something to be walked through.

That matters more against him than against most poke champions, because holding ground at range is what his game is built on.

Itemizing Against Corki

The mistake here is buying one resistance, so the list is deliberately mixed:

Kaenic RookernPlated SteelcapsRanduin's OmenControl Ward

Kaenic Rookern is the buy most teams skip against a marksman and the one that matters most here, because a large share of his damage is magic (and for some reason nobody expects it to be). Plated Steelcaps covers the other half, and it's the correct boot for anybody who has to be standing in front during a siege. Randuin's Omen belongs on whoever is walking at him, since the approach is the expensive part of the fight and the damage taken on the way is what decides whether it was worth starting. A Control Ward earns its slot because the package is his escape and his surprise engage, and it's much easier to answer when somebody saw it land.
