How to Beat Xayah

Xayah spends the whole fight setting a trap on the floor, and the moment you notice it is the moment you're already rooted inside it.

She's a marksman with no dash and one escape, so she should be the easiest carry in the game to kill. She isn't. The ground under a fight with her isn't neutral. It has been accumulating since the first trade, and the payoff is a root you can't dodge because it comes from behind you. Then there's the ultimate (it's untargetable), and she's holding it specifically for the moment you finally reach her. The solo queue tier list shows the company she keeps.

Strengths: What Makes Her Dangerous

The root arrives from behind you. Bladecaller [E] recalls everything she has dropped, and the feathers pull back through the ground you retreated across rather than the ground in front of her.
She has an answer to your engage. Featherstorm [R] makes her untargetable for the exact moment your combo was going to land, and she's holding it for that.
Her sustained damage is enormous. Deadly Plumage [W] turns a fight that lasts more than a couple of seconds into one she's winning by a growing margin.
Her attacks hit more than one thing. The passive makes every ability into a line of damage through the wave, so she's never really giving up farm to trade.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

She's short-ranged for a marksman. Anything that reaches further can farm and poke without ever being in the matchup.
She has no mobility at all until the ultimate. There's no dash to dodge a skillshot with, so a support who can start a fight without being sidestepped starts every fight.
The feathers are visible. They sit on the ground where anybody can see them, and the root only lands if you're standing in their return path when it happens.
The escape is one button on a long cooldown. Baiting it out costs a summoner spell and buys the next two minutes.
The early lane is unremarkable. The attack speed and the feather stacking need levels and items, and before they arrive she's a marksman with a bit of a slow start.

Countering Xayah

Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Xayah comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:

Watch the floor. Three feathers on the ground between you and safety is the whole warning, and it's always there before the root is.
Engage in a way that can't be dodged. She has no dash, so a point and click or a guaranteed engage removes the only defense she had.
Make her use the ultimate early. Whatever it costs to bait it, the two minutes afterward are worth more.
Fight her from outside her range. A marksman who reaches further wins the lane by default and gives up nothing to do it.

If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:

Playing a Bad Xayah Matchup

Retreat sideways rather than straight back. The feathers come home in lines, and the line you're worried about is almost always the one you just walked down.

Don't commit your engage into her ultimate. If it's up and you have nothing left afterward, the fight is one she gets to restart on her terms.

Punish the first six levels. She's at her most beatable before the attack speed matters, and the version of the lane that goes late is the version she wants.

Best Xayah Counters

Out-range her, engage in a way she can't dodge, or never stand where the feathers come back.

Jinx Out-Ranges Her With Rockets

Both of them start at 525 range. Switcheroo! [Q] swaps Jinx to her rocket launcher and adds another 100 to 200, and against a marksman whose only escape is her ultimate that gap decides most of the lane.

Flame Chompers! [E] does the rest. A chomper that gets stepped on roots for 1.5 seconds, and a Xayah who already spent Featherstorm [R] getting out of one fight has nothing left for the next.

Leona Nothing To Dodge With

Her engage doesn't ask permission, and Xayah has nothing to answer it with except the ultimate. Forcing that out at level six turns the next two minutes into an unprotected lane.

The chain of crowd control matters as much as the opener. Being held still is what stops the feather setup from ever paying off, since the recall needs her alive and free to press it.

Zeri Never In The Feather Line

Bladecaller [E] only roots someone hit by three returning feathers, which means it only roots someone standing between the feathers and Xayah. Spark Surge [E] gets Zeri out of that line on demand, and it carries her across walls too.

She trades from range with Burst Fire [Q] and never has to plant her feet. The root Xayah's whole lane depends on keeps missing.

Itemizing Against Xayah

Her damage is physical and it grows with how long the fight lasts, so buy for the duration rather than for the burst:

A Doran's Shield is the cheapest way to make the early trades go your way (the phase of the lane where she's most beatable). Plated Steelcaps is the natural next step, since almost all of her output is basic attacks landing repeatedly rather than a spell resolving. Frozen Heart is the specific one: the attack speed it takes off is aimed directly at the part of her kit that wins long fights, and against a champion whose plan is to keep attacking it does more than raw armor. Randuin's Omen is the late version of the same idea, and it also blunts the moment where she's been left free to attack for several seconds.
