Top Team Comps #127: Tank Slaying Heartsteel Counter Comp

Archive post, November 2022. The counter still works, but the item the top laner is built around is gone. Divine Sunderer left Summoner's Rift with the mythic system, so there's no buying the synergy the Fiora section opens with. She doesn't need it: the bonus damage the post is really describing comes from her own Vitals, and Duelist's Dance [Passive] and Grand Challenge [R] still turn a big health bar into true damage all by themselves. The target hasn't moved either, since Heartsteel is still in the shop and still stacks off punching people. Trundle's half is intact too, because King's Tribute [Passive] still heals him off nearby deaths and Subjugate [R] still steals a chunk of whatever the enemy tank has. Take the shopping advice as 2022 and the draft as still sound.

Are you annoyed at all the unkillable Heartsteel champions on the Rift? Do you just hate tanks in general? Try out this team composition that shreds thanks down to itty bitty bite-sized pieces and uses them as their personal source of food.

Heartsteel Who?

Check out how to play it below!

Champions

Bot Lane - Kog'Maw

Kog'Maw can be replaced with Vayne here but overall the raw damage he puts out tends to be higher than Vayne over the course of a team fight. Kog'Maw also has more team tank shredding at his disposal, further amplifying this team comp's effectiveness.

Mid Lane - Sylas

Sylas champion portrait

While Sylas may not be a traditional "tank-slaying" type of champion, he's also largely unkillable by tanks as a result of his massive healing abilities. Furthermore, tanks in the current meta tend to have very powerful ultimate abilities, making Sylas extremely potent against goliaths.

Support - Brand

No Lulu? That's right, we're going with Brand for this team composition for maximum damage output and a more offensive laning phase. This team composition is relatively low on AOE damage and Brand works wonderfully for doing extended percentage damage through team fights.

Jungle - Trundle

While Amumu may be a better AOE crowd-control pick, Trundle excels at tearing apart singular problem tanks. His passive and ultimate screams anti-Heartsteel with their enemy health scaling and the stronger enemy tanks are, the stronger Trundle gets.

Top Lane - Fiora

A champion with an incredibly beautiful synergy with Divine Sunderer, Fiora absolutely shreds tanks. Not only does she deal bonus damage based on opponent health amounts, but she also deals bonus TRUE DAMAGE scaling up against opponent health pools. Talk about using enemies as your own personal health battery!

Key Concepts

  • This team is flexible enough to split push or team fight depending on which lanes are doing well.
  • Even if this is a tank-slaying composition, make sure to still focus on enemy threats that are easier to kill first during team fights.

Countering

Countering this team involves good use of anti-healing, sustain, and crowd-control.

Here is an example team that may succeed:
  • Zed [Mid] - Strong laning phase, good assassin for killing backline
  • Fiddlesticks [Jungle] - Strong crowd-control and AOE initiation, difficult for Sylas to utilize his ultimate mid-team fight
  • Sett [Top] - Excellent laning phase against Fiora, good bruiser that deals more damage at low health
  • Nami [Support] - Good against heavy melee teams, but watch out for stunning teammates with Fiora's riposte
  • Nilah [Marksman] - Good champion against auto-attack based enemy bruisers, mobile enough to avoid the paws of bruisers.
