Vayne counter guide preview

Countering Vayne is usually a matter of beating her before she gets to the part of the game where nothing beats her.

Her early game is the weakest part of her kit by a wide margin, and Silver Bolts means that waiting her out is never a real plan. Punish her in the first fifteen minutes or do not punish her at all.

How to Beat Vayne

Matchup Guide · Patch 26.14 · 3 Counter Picks

Countering Vayne is usually a matter of beating her before she gets to the part of the game where nothing beats her.

Her early game is the weakest part of her kit by a wide margin, and Silver Bolts means that simply waiting her out is never a real plan against a Vayne who gets there. Beating her is about applying enough early pressure that she never reaches the items that make her a problem.

What a Counter Needs
  • Enough early damage to punish a genuinely weak level 1 to 6
  • Range that beats her 550 to 650 unit effective threat
  • Crowd control that lands while she is invisible during Final Hour

Vayne Overview

Strengths: What Makes Her Dangerous

  • Silver Bolts [W] deals a percentage of maximum health as true damage on the third hit, which means no amount of armor or health stops her.
  • Final Hour [R] grants invisibility during Tumble, so she becomes genuinely hard to target in the exact fight where she is strongest.
  • Condemn [E] is both a disengage and a stun if it puts you into terrain, so she peels for herself better than most marksmen.
  • Night Hunter gives her movement speed toward nearby enemy champions, which makes her chase potential far better than it looks.
  • Tumble [Q] drops to a 2 second cooldown at rank 5, so late game she is repositioning almost constantly.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • Her early game is genuinely poor. Low range and weak waveclear make the first ten minutes the worst part of her game by far.
  • Her attack range is 550, which is short enough that most bot lanes can trade with her for free before she has items.
  • She has no waveclear, so she cannot contest a shoved lane or escape a freeze without help.
  • Condemn is a 20 second cooldown at rank 1 and it is her only disengage tool.
  • She is extremely item dependent. A Vayne who is behind on items is a Vayne who contributes nothing for a long stretch.

Countering Vayne

Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Vayne comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:

  • Punish the early game hard. This is the single most important property in the matchup, because everything else about her improves and this never does.
  • Out-range her. At 550 attack range she has to walk into almost every other marksman's threat radius to farm.
  • Bring area damage or crowd control. Final Hour's invisibility only hides her from targeted abilities, not from a zone.
  • Deny her waveclear. Freezing or shoving both punish a champion who cannot manage a wave on her own.

If you are already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:

Playing a Bad Vayne Matchup

Shove the wave from level 1 and keep shoving. Vayne has no waveclear, so a permanently pushed lane forces her to farm under tower and miss minions she badly needs.

Remember Condemn when you calculate her threat range. Her effective reach is her attack range plus a Tumble plus the knock-back, which is considerably further than 550 units.

Stay away from walls when she is close. Condemn only stuns if it puts you into terrain, and fighting in open ground removes half the ability.

Use area damage rather than targeted abilities during Final Hour. The invisibility is only on her Tumble, so a zone or a skillshot still catches her where a point-and-click will not.

Best Vayne Counters

These three all attack the same weakness from different angles: Vayne's early game, before she reaches the items that make the matchup unwinnable.

Miss Fortune champion icon

Miss Fortune Wins the Early Game

Miss Fortune is the best pick into Vayne in the current patch, and it is a straightforward early game beating rather than a mechanical trick. Love Tap deals bonus physical damage whenever she attacks a new target, which makes her poke pattern in a two-versus-two lane far more efficient than Vayne's.

Double Up then hits Vayne through a minion, so Miss Fortune can pressure her without ever stepping into 550 unit range. Make It Rain slows and denies the wave that Vayne cannot clear anyway, and Strut keeps her out of Condemn range. By the time Vayne wants to fight, she is already down enough farm that she never catches up.

Seraphine champion icon

Seraphine Nullifies the Poke

Seraphine beats Vayne by making the early trades meaningless. Surround Sound shields and hastes her lane, and heals as well when she is already shielded, which undoes exactly the sort of chip damage Vayne needs to accumulate before she has items.

Stage Presence makes every third spell cast twice, so her lane presence is much heavier than a single ability suggests, and Beat Drop impairs Vayne's movement in a line, punishing the Tumble repositioning she relies on. Encore charms through a whole team fight and its range grows with every champion it passes through, which catches her even at the back of a fight.

Aphelios champion icon

Aphelios Out-ranges Her

Aphelios answers the range problem directly. Calibrum marks its target from long range and enables a follow-up attack from even further out, which lets him whittle Vayne down from well outside the 550 units she needs to do anything back.

The weapon rotation is what makes it stick. Severum gives him sustain to win a prolonged lane, Gravitum roots for the moment she tries to disengage with Condemn, and Moonlight Vigil applies whichever effect he currently needs. Against a champion who is weak until she has items, an opponent who can pick the right tool every thirty seconds is a difficult early game to survive.

Itemizing Against Vayne

Vayne mixes physical and percentage-health true damage, so armor helps against her early game but stops mattering later. Build for the phase you are actually in:

Plated Steelcaps Randuin's Omen Frozen Heart Gargoyle Stoneplate

Plated Steelcaps and Randuin's Omen are genuinely effective before she has items, and Frozen Heart cuts the attack speed that Silver Bolts depends on. Nothing stops the true damage itself, which is exactly why the answer to Vayne is beating her early rather than itemizing for late.
