Introduction

Some people have great difficulty landing skill shots. No matter what they do, they couldn't even hit a Cho'Gath with Morgana binding. Fear not, we've got some tips below that can help even worst aim finally land some spells. You can finally put Nunu aside for some more fun and interactive champions!

Check out our top 10 times to use skill shots below!

When they CS or auto-attack

Even the cleanest players have some delay in-between when they auto attack and when they move away to dodge a skill shot. If you throw one right as they start their animation, it's much easier to hit them. Better yet, wait for when they start committing to getting a valuable last hit on a cannon minion.

During a cast animation

If you want to increase the self-stun duration of the enemy champion, instead of waiting for an auto attack, you can wait for them to throw something with spell cast delay like Caitlyn's Piltover Peacemaker [Q] to maximize the duration they need to stand still to cast it.

When they're CC'ed

If mini-stuns aren't enough for you to land anything, wait until one of your teammates lands an actual crowd-control spell before throwing your skill shot to REALLY make it hard to miss.

From a bush

Most skill shots have some sort of wind-up time, making it much easier to dodge. However, if you throw a spell from a bush, it greatly limits the amount of reaction time enemies have to spells like Thresh's Death Sentence [Q].

Directly after flash

Right when enemies flash, you know precisely where they've gone and that they have no other abilities to dodge your skill shot. This is an excellent opportunity to smack them with a clean Blitzcrank Rocket Grab [Q].

Cornered on a wall

Most skill shots are linear, and this makes landing them a simple exercise in geometry. If you cut off their escape angles by approaching them as they run away near a wall, you can limit their range of movement. This makes hitting spells like Ashe's Enchanted Crystal Arrow [R] much easier.

Anticipating flash/blast cone

This may not make landing skill shots "easier", but if you know the enemy is about to flash over a ledge, lining up your skill shot with where they currently are and where they can flash to can greatly increase your chances of hitting them. Similarly, if they're lined up with a blast cone, you can throw your spells to where they're going to fly up in the air.

On an objective

There's nothing harder than letting go of an objective like first tower or dragon when it's so close you can taste it. This makes you a easy pickings for skill shots like Ziggs' Mega Inferno Bomb [R]. Most people will try and finish the objective before ducking for cover. However, this is usually too late.

From behind a wall

Similar to a bush, throwing skill shot from behind a wall limits the wind-up animation time of spells. For some champions throwing it from behind a wall is better (i.e. Blitzcrank or Amumu). However, for certain other champions like Brand, shooting spells from behind a wall may greatly limit your range compared to from a bush.

When they try to clear a control ward

This is the culmination of a bunch of ideas above. Generally control wards are placed along choke points, limiting the enemy movements. They also can't see you, letting you limit your wind-up animation. Not only that, but they need to auto-attack in order to clear the ward objective, resulting in a very predictable movement. With that being said, be careful when you're trying to kill a control ward, especially if you don't know where the enemy jungler is.
