Weird Picks #53: Support Veigar

Veigar as a support is quickly gaining traction, now sporting a 12% play rate out of all the times he is picked. Although it sounds like a fairly high number, this places him at the 26th most played supports, behind picks like Malphite and Taliyah.

Nevertheless, this is far higher than he was prior to his rework, mostly as a result of the AP gains he receives from harassing his opponents. Should Veigar support really be "a thing" though? Let's check out the pros and cons below:

Introduction

Veigar as a support is quickly gaining traction, now sporting a 12% play rate out of all the times he is picked. Although it sounds like a high number, this places him as the 26th most played support, behind picks like Malphite and Taliyah.

Nevertheless, this is far higher than he was prior to his rework, mostly as a result of the AP gains he receives from harassing his opponents. Should Veigar support really be "a thing" though? Let's check out the pros and cons below:

How to Play
Runes: Ability Power Quints, Magic Penetration Reds, Flat Armor Yellows, Flat Magic Resist Blues
Masteries: 12-18-0, Thunderlord Support Masteries
Abilities: Q, E, Q, W then prioritize R > Q > E > W
Core Items: Eye of the Watchers, Sorcerer's Shoes, Morellonomicon, Rabadon's Deathcap, Void Staff, Luden's Echo

Why It Works

Powerful AP Harass Scaling and Late Game Percentage Damage
As a result of Veigar's new passive that gives him one AP every time he hits an enemy with a spell, Veigar is able to concentrate on both stacking AP AND doing what supports do best, which is annoy the heck out of the enemy champions. His ultimate also has percentage AP scaling, which although does tend to end up being used as a KS tool, allows him to remain effective late game, even without too many items.

Large AOE Stun
Although Veigar's Event Horizon (E) has a bit of a delay, he essentially gets Thresh's ultimate on a much lower cooldown. Additionally, his AOE CC is a stun rather than a slow, which greatly increases its effectiveness.

Late Game Monster
When games drag on too long, some supports start lagging behind in usefulness, especially when the enemy team is extremely tanky and difficult to impact via a few seconds of CC. However, Veigar certainly does not suffer from the same issues if he manages to farm up his Q correctly. Instead, he ends up being another AP carry that can push your team through the late game.

Potential Pitfalls

Delayed CC
As a support, many players are faced with the requirement of being the primary engagement or disengagement champion on the team. However, since Veigar's main source of CC has a slight delay to it, enemy teams may be able to quickly maneuver and create situations where his CC has zero effect.

Squishy Harass Champion
Although Veigar has a moderate range for his Baleful Strike (Q), it's nothing that someone would describe as "long-range". This means that during laning phase, he can quickly get slaughtered by all-in melee champions like Alistar or Leona if he gets too close and plays too aggressively.

Conclusions

Against passive lanes, Veigar has the potential to snowball very hard. However, he remains very squishy in the early game and can die quickly to champions like Leona if he isn't careful. If he does manage to stay even during laning phase though, his Event Horizon (E) is a powerful AOE stun that can quickly change the tides of a teamfight. You may want to bring another primary source of CC though.

Suggested Rating: Mid Tier 3
