Introduction

Mordekaiser is generally played as a Rylai focus champion combined with some burst damage via Protobelt. However, tank Mordekaiser can also potentially work well in the current meta. Check out this quick guide on how to become an unstoppable dragon taming force. Hue hue.

How to Play
Runes: Ability Power Quints, Magic Penetration Reds, Flat Armor Yellows, Flat Magic Resist Blues
Masteries: 12-0-18, Grasp of the Undying Masteries
Abilities: W, E, Q,  then prioritize R > W > E > Q
Core Items: Sunfire Cape, Sterak's Gage, Mercury's Treads, Spirit Visage, Dead Man's Plate, Thornmail

Why It Works

Passive Shield Scaling
Mordekaiser's passive, Iron Man, is limited by his maximum health. At 3000 health, his shield has a maximum of 750 health, meaning that he will almost never max out his passive if he's taking damage. Although this tank version of Mordekaiser doesn't deal as much damage as his AP form, he has much higher amounts of sustained damage, resulting in higher overall shield generation.

Crazy Scaling With Dragon
The Dragon pit is now more hotly contested than ever as a result of the powerful buffs it provides. As a result, Mordekaiser can now consistently keep up the Dragon Ghost via his ultimate if his team is winning. This same dragon gains 15% of tank Mordekaiser's maximum health, and Mordekaiser gains 25% of the dragon's bonus health. At a full 75 seconds worth of ghost duration, Mordekaiser in this state is INSANELY tanky.

Late Game Monster
If Mordekaiser manages to take out an enemy marksman late game, most of the time the strategy is to quickly burst him down to prevent your enslaved marksman from quickly wrecking havoc in a 6v4 scenario. However, as a powerful tank, Mordekaiser doesn't fall prey to mediocre tactics like that.

Potential Pitfalls

Weak Gap Closer
As a tank champion rather than a burst champion, Mordekaiser will need to stick to enemies to deal damage. Deadman's plate gives him a decent amount of catch potential, but isn't quite the end-all 1v1. As a result, Mordekaiser needs to be able to pick situations where enemies have no choice but to fight him rather than do any extended chases.

Much Weaker On Losing Teams
If Morde's team is losing and isn't able to convert any dragons, he effectively loses out on a ton of health. However, if the reason his team is losing is because the enemy marksman is extremely fed, this can still turn in his favor.

Conclusions

Tank Mordekaiser removes a lot of the weaknesses regular Mordekaiser has, which includes surviving long enough to use his Q burst and lasting through being marked as a primary target in team fights. However, with the new dragons as a prime team objective, tank Mordekaiser works well as a damage soaker on the front line. Even if you're losing, just take the enemy marksman.

Suggested Rating: Mid Tier 2
