Weird Picks #36: AD Tank Teemo

Hi everyone! I hope those of you celebrating holidays are having a good one. Today's Weird Pick Wednesday comes with a side of nostalgia, pulling from a long forgotten Teemo build with some new tweaks.

As a champion who draws a lot of aggression from across the rift, Teemo is renown for having a built-in hidden passive global taunt, making all enemies subconsciously aim for trying to kill him.

Teemo has a decent set of tools to prevent enemies from successfully taking him down, but sometimes you just want some extra insurance. In that case, AD Tank Teemo may suit your purposes much better than the classic AP or basic on-hit Teemo. Check out the full details below!

How to Play
Runes: Attack Speed Quints, Hybrid Penetration Reds, Flat Armor Yellows, Flat Magic Resist Blues
Masteries: 12-0-18, Tanky AD Masteries
Abilities: E, W, Q, E then prioritize  R > E > W > Q
Core Items: Blade of the Ruined King/Guinsoo's Rageblade, Frozen Mallet, Sterak's Gage, Statikk Shiv, Warmog's Armor/Randuin's Omen/Banshee's Veil

Why It Works

Strong Sustained Dueling Power
As a natural attack speed based champion, Teemo draws most of his strength from long battles that make use of his powerful kiting abilities. Using either the sustain from Blade of the Ruined King or the natural power spike from Guinsoo's Rageblade in a longer fight, Tank Teemo can quickly gain the upper hand.

Excellent Sticking Power
Teemo's ranged attacks work in great synergy with his movement speed boost via his W to make sure enemies can't escape his onslaught. Combined with Frozen Mallet, enemies without short cooldown movement enhances quickly fall prey to Teemo in any 1v1 situation.

Improved Split Pushing
Although building Blade over Guinsoo stalls Teemo's waveclearing power until later, Teemo can still split push very hard depending on when he picks up his Statikk Shiv. Using this tank build, Teemo can stall out for much longer than with his standard AP build. This allows your team to take objectives and snowball in opportune areas of the map.

Last Blind in Game
After the removal of Quinn's blind last patch, Teemo is now the last remaining champion with a Blind skill. This works well against the insane power of marksman at the moment, and makes him a good diver and/or front line damage dealer.

Potential Pitfalls

Low Scaling Resists
Melee champions gain scaling magic resist per level (for the most part). However, since Teemo is ranged, he doesn't get this added bonus. This makes him a little weaker than the normal tanks in terms of damage mitigation.

No Built-In Mitigation or Sustain
Unlike champions like Dr. Mundo or Maokai, Teemo doesn't have any built-in sustain as a front liner. This means that he's much more reliant on his kiting power, making him a much more skill intensive kind of tank.

Weak TP Ganks
Unlike many other top laners, Teemo has no true built-in CC until he picks up a Frozen Mallet. This makes his TP ganks (especially early game) much weaker than a lot of other top laners. As this is the case, it might be better to just run ignite and try to win your lane early.

Low Waveclear
If Teemo starts falling behind for some strange reason, he does have some trouble waveclearing. With the rune setup above, players may also have trouble last-hitting at tower due to his low base damage without his E. For those of you who think this might be the case, feel free to run flat AD quints instead.

Conclusions

AD Tank Teemo is an extremely fun build once he ramps up. However, it's a very expensive build compared to others at the moment, and is thus very gold reliant. If you start to fall behind, it's very difficult to catch up or help your team in fights.

However, with the latest buffs to Guinsoo's Rageblade, it might be viable again (even with the recent price increase).

Suggested Rating: Mid Tier 3
