FOTM Report: Tank AD Evelynn

Introduction

Ever since Evelynn's rise on the solo queue tier list, some of you expressed curiosity on what build is used along with why it's effective. Although her win rate is actually much close to 50% this patch than in the last two, she's been consistently on the top end of the solo queue jungle scene ever since tanks took over the scene.

How to Play
Runes: Ability Power Quints, Attack Damage Reds, Armor Yellows, Ability Power Blues
Masteries: 21-9-0, specialized Evelynn masteries
Abilities: Q, E, W then prioritize  R > Q > E > W
Core items: Stalker's Blade (warrior enchant), blade of the ruined king/iceborn gauntlet, randuin's omen, banshee veil, trinity force

Note on Build Order

As it stands, Evelynn's build is actually very flexible. Other than the jungle item, she can itemize in a variety of ways. However, she generally focuses on taking advantage of her insanely low cooldown on her Q to constantly proc whatever item she chooses to make.

Why Now?

As a powerful counterjungler with excellent early game ambushing skills, Evelynn can snowball hard and pick up her blade of the ruined king, becoming a very good tank killer.

Evelynn does well against champions like:
  • Sejuani
  • Volibear
  • Skarner
However, she does poorly against strong assassin types with good early game such as:
  • Kha'Zix
  • Nidalee
  • Rengar
As assassins return to the scene, she definitely loses a lot of her power. However, she still works well as a counterpick.

FOTM? I've seen this since this since march .-.

She is a really good duelist against tanks and some marksman, with CinderHulk, Ruined King and Iceborn her dps just sundenly goes out of the scale, and tath's in early to mid game.
She is also a bit like skarner; very hard to build against, tons off mixed and free damage, and she is so sticky tath hurts

Only one ability is used to damage monsters in the jungle, and a shield to keep her alive, but her tether is useless. How does this work exactly?
I get the ganking aspect of a jungle karma, but her clear is well, lackluster at the beginning of the game until around mid.

Way too many better options, Just because you like a weird pic doesn't make it a "good" pick in the current meta.

Q and the Tether both damage the monsters

Magus is still better than Warrior, I laugh everytime I see an Eve got it.

can you do a thread about items ? like rageblade and champs about underplayed champs like aatrox ? jax etc

IMO magnus is more situational on eve, most of the time u would want to burst down enemy fast enough in a gank then sustain damage against them, thus why warrior, coz apparently after the changes long ago, her e is now a physical damage spell and is her main burst, not to mention all her spell still scale with ad so ur spike is still gonna dish out pain (it is gonna anyway, with those early ap runes, and if ur tanking then no point building so much ap late game), also better aa is always welcome for better clear, magnus is okish i guess on eve, but i just felt warrior suits her better right now

the idea is now the tether is one of her most important jungling spell, since ult tether give her so much sustain that she can just gank and heal back from a camp, or something like that

Ehhhh that's not exactly true. Assuming you are building more ad the flat pen gives you a great early spike.

you do realize rengar, khazix or nidalli dont have a strong early ... if u wanna rape evelynn quickly, lee sin or xin zao are much more appropriate, and udyr does decent too.

The best picks are champions who can go against any comp and fit into any comp. A good pick is one that can fill in a viable niche and perform under specific circumstances. Jungle Karma is not a tier 1 or 2 pick but I believe that she is a strong tier 3 pick. She has strong level 2 ganks that can cause a lane to steamroll. She does massive ap damage while offering insane teamfight utility. Her aoe q along with her ult-tether allows her to have decent clear and sustain after an admittedly brutal first clear. Karma fills an underutilized niche for a jungler. Nid has stronger ganks and Fiddle does more damage/sustain. However, Karma has a better teamfighting compared to those two. She offers insane utility for a jungler, and while nunu might be a better utility option I feel that Karma's innate damages allows her to be a better pick in some cases.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Mac MorrisJune 13, 2015

Sej also has a brutal early clear and offers amazing teamfighting utility, except karma does more damage and offers shields at the expense of less tankiness.

    ReplyDelete
  20. John DeppJune 13, 2015

Quite frankly that niche is filled alot better by Ekko jungle. Way better clears, ganks are just as if not more brutal, Ekko's teamfight damage and utility is off the charts, even when built full tank.
Even Diana jungle fills the same role better than Karma. Sure she's fun, but a sub-optimal pick in all regards when it comes to jungle.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Mac MorrisJune 13, 2015

Ekko is pick/banned at the moment and it looks like he will be nerfed to where his ganks will be just sad. Diana doesn't really offer utility and is more of an ap assassin. Also Diana ganks are bad until she hits 6 while karma is like lee sin/shaco and give an easy kill level 2. Other junglers do her job better for sure but karma offers cheese factor.

I'm not sure I agree with Jax and aatrox being under played but I like the idea. My thoughts:
Support: Sona and Leona. Neither are that uncommon but in my opinion if you aren't a supp main they are who you should play. They are both easy to be decent with but have pretty high potential once you put some games in.
Jungle: Amumu, Amumu and Amumu. Again not the most uncommon but he is extremely powerful in soloq and often gets overlooked for meta champions
Adc: Cait and Quinn. The first is essentially the same as amumu. However the 2nd is a true dark horse. Vayne is very popular and quinn completely ruins her day. Blind=worthless vayne
Mid: Ziggs, oh ziggs. He fits into most comps, provides decent utility for his damage and is very safe. Maybe you accidently gave up first blood to an assassin or are getting camped. Too bad for them because the rest of lane will be you spamming Q from under tower and keeping W ready to go at all times.
Top: Swain. I think Ssj mentioned him and the return of more melee tops. Seems like a safe place for you too become the unkillable Dot slinging birdman with easy CS and a kill or two or 10.

That's the way you play her. Nothing special.

  25. Magus is good for poking. Warrior is better for sustained dueling.
I used to love and only stand by AP/Hybrid eve, but... Warrior is something you pick up for your dueling and then deleting, because of the armor penetration and sustained damage. As Evelynn, you won't burst much with Magus unless you have Lich.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Jake ShawJune 14, 2015

    This is my opinion...

Magus is better on Eve if you're looking to play for the early game, but it isn't very useful into mid/late game and scales awfully unless you build full AP (which leaves you squishy with no innate escape or hard/reliable CC = weak against the current jungle meta being tanky motherfuckers and have a buttload of hard CC) You might as well switch Magus later on because it is only really effective on champions who must build AP to be effective (Nidalee, Fiddlesticks)

Warrior is far better due to many of the things mentioned above, good ad scalings on skills, still gives some CDR, E giving an AA steroid and applying on hit effects (Sheen & BORK) and the armor pen to compliment your E's high PHYSICAL base damages and shreds tanks. Warrior also synergises far better with BORK (the corest of core items on Eve) thanks to the natural AA steroid from the get go, combined w/ borks passive gives you alot more dmg than Magus. Although her skills do benefit alot from Magus, Q having a better AP scaling E scaling with 100% of AP, i feel as if the AP given from runes/masteries is sufficient for early game damage, and Gauntlet giving you a small spike in AP later on aswell as maxing your CDR%

Gauntlet, another core item on Eve (despite technically being an AP item) allows your sheen to give you extra dmg based on current AD so is additionally effective when building warrior and E also applies BORKS passive so you can shred tanks. Its also better than Triforce as it gives you the CDR, Resistances which you NEED ideally more than HP thanks to your ULTs HP shield, a nice amount of mana, some AP to buff your good scalings and to support your AD scaling sheen procs/on hit effects. (its also WAAAAAAAAY cheaper, Phage and Zeal are waste IMO and Phage's MS bonus is unnecessary thanks to W) ... pls it is silly to stack sheens

Building Warrior also allows you to build defensively later on cause you'll have all the dmg you need to scale well by midgame, being useful in teamfights and still having duelling/squishy deleting power

Ive noticed Eve is very comparable to Irelia, most of her dmg comes from sheen, autos..*dat true dmg* and having a high base-dmg skill/multiple skills that can apply on hit effects successively (Q, E and multiple sheen procs from R). She can an also sacrifice building more raw dmg due to the power of on hit effects, can jump into a fight having teamfight bonuses (Passive tenacity around multiple enemies and Eve having a HP shield depending on how many enemies she hits w/ her ult) being able to chunk squishies and stick around long enough to take down the tanks.

Some of this may be irrelevant to the discussion at hand, i enjoy writing essays and i get all keyboard warrior and over passionate when i write :P But i see alot of Magus Eves, and being an Eve main, whenever i see them build into the AD/Tank route im sitting here like???? 0.o Why build that if you go Magus??? You see... you waste alot of potential bonus stats building AD/AA enhancing items like BORK, Hexdrinker and Gauntlet by simply not going Warrior!

  27. Will this still be "the best(tm)" setup when/in Magus will be/is replaced by Runeglaive?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Lol that's just not true. Sej has great clears, even early. You obviously don't play Sej that often.

You can't compare a top tier jungler like Sej with an off meta pick like Karma. It's just stupid.

  29. ConfusedTeemoJune 15, 2015

To be fair you could argue it already isn't. AD bruiser Eve is quite strong and is probably the best build for a lot of peoole. That will stay the same (imo). However, full ap eve definitely gives you more carry potential. Why don't more people play it then? You have next to no margin for error. You will be the squishiest thing on the rift. That being said, you can 2 shot adcs and mages.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ok, playing her as a burst-full-ap-mage leaves her squishy as hell; totally agree with that.
My question however had a somewhat different intention ;) should have clarified that :)
So: could it be worth thinkin of using Runeglaive instead of Warrior in an ad-bruiser-build? Is it worth losing that APen for the early Sheen proc? You could skip TF/other-Sheen-Items-you-would-build and go something like: Runeglaive > BotRK > Tank(tm)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Mac MorrisJune 16, 2015

I play sej quite a bit, when not banned of course, and agree that she is a top tier pick who is overall stronger than karma. However every champion has weaknesses and sej can be 'countered' by early invades where she is at really low health if she attempts to 2 buff start like 90% of soloqueue. I'm just saying that karma has pros that only she can do and should be on the radar especially if the AP jungle buffs go through PBE. For a 'Tank' jungle sej's first clear is difficult when compared to other tanks like nunu or shyv.

Is it better to go AD or AP on Eve?

    ReplyDelete
  33. LexingtonJune 16, 2015

Eve is a really flexible champion and it depends on what your team is lacking. Her Q scales more off her AP, while her E scales more off her AD (along with her auto-attacks obviously). If you already have a heavily AD team you may be better off building her AP just so then you aren't countered by armour, but generally she is more effective now as an AD champion since Deathfire Grasp was removed. However, I've seen her used effectively with Devourer as her jungle enchantment and even Cinderhulk. Cinderhulk is surprisingly effective when combined with Frozen Heart and Liandrie's Torment, along with other high health items due to the CD reduction and Liandrie's proc on her Q. Really, I've found that you can just be really creative with Eve's build and target toward counter-building far better than other champions.

lol Khazix and Rengar and 0 problem for evelynn, Nida is one of the easiest matchups. My build:
Trailblazer with warriors > mobi boots > Iceborn > Black Cleaver > BOTRK > Maw > sell jungle item and get GA/Zephyr

    ReplyDelete
  35. So right now, Magus is only the better buy if you build it with other CDR items (CDR boots or Frozen Heart). This is because Hate Spike (Q) does not scale linearly with CDR, so getting CDR capped provides a huge spike in magic damage for a mid-game AD Evelynn.

Runeglaive might get picked up Eve players who go jungle item => pure tank items (i.e. pro players) if it does more damage than warrior, since those players were not building Sheen before. While it might make AP Eve viable again, it doesn't make sense on AD Eve since triforce is so much better.

  36. Spencer SmithJune 26, 2015

So, with the new jungle item I have been making a hybrid AP tank eve. Runeglaive, Abyssal, Liandry's Torment, Rylai's, and mobi boots, and other situational item

Does that work? I was wondering about getting Evelynn, and was about to ask whether Evelynn should be built with Runeglaive or Warrior enchant. (obviously, I'd make the rest of my build according to whichever enchant I chose, AP or AD)
