VALORANT error

VAN 216 in VALORANT: you hit Play too often, now wait 30 minutes

Riot VanguardVALORANT

The message

Vanguard Error: VAN 216. An unexpected error with Vanguard has occurred and the client will now close.

What it means

VALORANT was launched too many times in a short spell, so Vanguard is making you wait. Nothing on your PC is broken by this code.

What to try first

Close the Riot Client and leave it for 30 minutes. Pressing Play before then restarts the wait from zero.

Is it you or Riot? If a lot of players got the same code at once, it's likely the servers. Check Riot's service status page for VALORANT before you start reinstalling things.

Seeing it in League instead? VAN 216 is a Vanguard code, so League can throw it too. The League version is here: VAN 216 in League of Legends.

VAN 216 is a timer

Riot's article for VAN 216 is about as short as Vanguard articles get. Too many launch attempts close together trip it, and the cure is to stay off the Play button for a full half hour. Its fix text even names VALORANT outright, so this is one Vanguard code that was written with VALORANT players in mind.

The trap is the restart. Each press of Play inside those 30 minutes puts the clock back to the start, so mashing the button out of habit keeps you locked out for as long as you keep doing it. Set a timer on your phone and go do something else.

Why you got here in the first place

Nobody launches VALORANT a dozen times for fun. Usually some other error kept closing the game, you kept relaunching, and VAN 216 is the bill for all those attempts. Once the wait is over, the original problem is still sitting underneath. If a different code comes back on the next launch (VAN 293 and VAN 289 are common ones in VALORANT), look that one up and fix it, or you'll be back on the 216 timer before long.

Riot's fix, in Riot's order

  1. Wait 30 minutes without pressing Play

Every press of Play inside the window restarts the 30 minutes, so close the client and leave it.
