VAN 302: Antivirus or another program is interfering with Vanguard

The message

Connection Error: VALORANT has encountered a connection error. Please relaunch the client to reconnect. Error Code: VAN 302

What it means

Vanguard spotted a program on your PC that's interfering with it. Riot names antivirus first, and anything that modifies the game environment after that.

What to try first

Turn off any antivirus you run besides Windows Security, restart and launch. If 302 stays, uninstall that antivirus for the test.

Is it you or Riot? If lots of players are hitting this at once, it's probably the servers. Check League server status before you start reinstalling things.

The game closed, and Vanguard names a culprit type

VAN 302 usually shows up as your game shutting on you with a connection error that mentions VALORANT. The network isn't what Riot blames. Its article says Vanguard detected software interfering with how it works, antivirus included, along with any program that modifies or meddles with the game environment. League and VALORANT share Vanguard, which is why the VALORANT wording comes through in League too.

Riot's fix is two steps and both are about taking something away. Antivirus goes first. Disabling it is the opening move, and if the error survives a restart with it disabled, Riot has you uninstall it temporarily, since some security suites keep running when they say they're off. After that, close whatever else touches the game or Vanguard.

VAN 302 next to VAN 289

Riot describes VAN 289 in nearly the same terms, but its list is longer: a restart and a clean boot come before any antivirus step, and it goes straight to uninstalling rather than disabling. If Riot's two steps for 302 don't find the program, the clean boot from the 289 list is the thorough way to hunt it down (it switches off every non-Microsoft service for one boot).

Riot's fix, in Riot's order

  1. Take third-party antivirus out of the picture

    If you've added an antivirus beyond the one built into Windows, disable it and restart. If the error stays, uninstall it for the test, since some of these keep running when they claim to be off. Windows Security covers you in the meantime.

  2. Close overlays, capture tools and anything newly installed

    Fully exit overlays, screen recorders and anything that hooks into games, and anything you installed around the time the error started. Check the tray and Task Manager, because a closed window doesn't mean a closed program.
