What it means

Something went wrong with graphics while League was starting, and the client won't launch.

What to try first

Update your graphics card driver, as the message suggests. If that isn't it, delete League's game.cfg file.

Is it you or Riot? If lots of players are hitting this at once, it's probably the servers. Check League server status before you start reinstalling things.

Why this one appears

Riot's error table ties the Unknown DirectX error to graphics instability, and says it stops the League client from launching. DirectX is the Microsoft layer games use to talk to your graphics card, so a driver that's out of date is the first suspect (the error message itself tells you as much).

Riot's table adds a second fix the message doesn't mention: deleting game.cfg. The table doesn't say where it lives, so search your League of Legends install folder for it.

How to fix it

  1. Update your graphics driver. Riot's crash guide has you find your card by pressing Win+R, typing dxdiag, and reading the name on the Display tab. Then get the newest driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel, whichever made it.
  2. Delete game.cfg. Close League and the Riot Client first, delete the file, then launch again.
