Error 002: a League patch that couldn't install

League of Legends Error Code 002What it means
A patch didn't go through, so the client won't let you log in. Riot files it as a storage problem, with antivirus as the second suspect.
What to try first
Free up space on the drive League is installed on, then restart the Riot Client and let it patch again.
Is it you or Riot? If lots of players are hitting this at once, it's probably the servers. Check League server status before you start reinstalling things.
Where 002 comes from
Riot only covers 002 in its general League error table, where it gets two lines. It lumps the code in with Error 004 (002's row opens by comparing the two): both break the patching process, and 002 also locks you out of logging in. That entry was last updated on May 19, 2025.
Riot names two causes, in this order. The first is space: the drive doesn't have enough room for the update. The second is your antivirus mistaking something inside the new patch files for a threat and getting in the way (a false positive, in Riot's terms).
How to fix it
Check the drive League lives on before anything else. For most people that's C:. Clear room, then restart the Riot Client from the system tray and try again.
If there's plenty of room, switch off your third-party antivirus for the length of the patch, let it finish, and turn protection back on right after. Riot has a separate article about updates freezing at 0% that blames antivirus too. It names Avast and AVG, and suggests their Passive Mode as a stopgap (Riot adds its own "at your own risk" warning there).
Still stuck? Riot's full fix list for 004 is the natural next step, since Riot groups the two together. It adds running the Riot Client as administrator, a firewall exception, the connection checklist and a clean reinstall.
