How to Beat Tristana
Tristana starts the game with the shortest range of any marksman and ends it with the longest, so the entire matchup is a question of when you decided to take her seriously.
Almost every marksman gets better with items. She's unusual in that she gets better at the thing that decides marksman fights (how far away she's allowed to stand). Early on she has to walk into range that anybody can punish. Late she doesn't have to walk anywhere at all, and she has a jump that comes back whenever she kills. The window in between is where this matchup is decided, and it's longer and more forgiving than the people who lose to her tend to believe.
- Range in the early lane, where she has none
- A way to answer the jump rather than the approach
- The willingness to keep fighting a lane that gets harder every ten minutes

Tristana Overview
Strengths: What Makes Her Dangerous
- Her range grows all game. The advantage every other marksman has to buy, she's simply given, and by the late game there is nobody she has to walk toward.
- The jump comes back on a kill. Rocket Jump [W] is her escape until it's her engage, and a fight where she finishes anybody is one she can enter twice.
- She takes towers faster than anybody. That's a map advantage rather than a fight advantage, and it decides more games than her damage does.
- Her burst arrives all at once. The charge on a target detonates on her terms, so a health bar that looked survivable was measured against a slower champion.
- Her ultimate answers the thing that beats marksmen. Anything that reaches her gets sent away again, which is a real problem for the champions built specifically to reach her.
Weaknesses: Where You Get In
- The early lane is genuinely terrible for her. She has the shortest range in her role and no way to fix it yet. Every aggressive bot lane in the game beats her here, and most of them forget to.
- The jump is one button. Once it's spent she's a short ranged marksman standing where she chose to stand (and it's a long cooldown before the reset exists).
- Her burst is on a visible timer. The charge is announced, and a target who breaks off before it finishes has taken a fraction of what was coming.
- She has no answer to sustained pressure. She wants the fight to be short. Anything that survives the burst and keeps going is a fight she wasn't built for.
- She cannot fix a lane that is already lost. Her scaling is real but it isn't fast. A bot lane that's down two towers doesn't get to reach the version of her that wins games.
Countering Tristana
Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Tristana comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:
- Fight her before level six and keep fighting after it. This is the counter and it has a deadline. The lead has to be built while the range gap is in your favor, because it closes on its own.
- Make her use the jump to escape instead of to engage. Every fight in this matchup is decided by which direction that button was pressed in, and you can influence it by threatening her before she wants to commit.
- Break contact when the charge lands on you. Walking away from a detonation is available to almost everyone and for some reason taken by almost nobody.
- Defend the tower properly. She threatens structures more than she threatens people, and a tower given up early is worth more to her than any kill.
If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:
Playing a Bad Tristana Matchup
Play for the early game and accept that the late one isn't yours. There is no version of the fortieth minute where a short fight goes your way instead of hers.
Take fights where she has already spent the jump. It's the single largest swing available in the matchup and it happens several times a game.
Group and force objectives rather than splitting. Left alone she takes structures faster than your team can trade for them.
Best Tristana Counters
Three ways to beat someone who is weak now and unreachable later: end the early lane, refuse the dive, or blank the burst. One counter each.

Ziggs Ends The Early Lane
Bouncing Bomb [Q] lands far past her attack range on a short cooldown, so the first several levels are Ziggs throwing damage at somebody who can't answer it without jumping. Hexplosive Minefield [E] then covers the ground Rocket Jump [W] would land on, and every mine slows for 1.5 seconds.
He also races her to the tower. Satchel Charge [W] executes a turret under a health threshold, which takes away the lane's usual reward for her. It does require actually pressing the advantage while it's there.

Xayah Refuses The Dive
Her ultimate makes her not be there for the exact second the jump arrives, and that jump is the enemy's plan for the late game.
Her roots then punish the landing, and a marksman who has spent her only movement ability inside someone else's team is in serious trouble.

Yasuo Blanks The Burst
Wind Wall [W] destroys hostile projectiles, and nearly everything she does is one. Her basic attacks, Explosive Charge [E] and Buster Shot [R] all stop at the wall.
Once Rocket Jump [W] is spent she has no second way out, and Sweeping Blade [E] off her own minion wave keeps him on top of her.
Itemizing Against Tristana
The first two are the matchup and the last two are ordinary insurance:

Plated Steelcaps and Randuin's Omen both attack the same thing (how much of the burst lands before you get to leave). Zhonya's Hourglass is for whoever she keeps jumping on, because the detonation has a timer and the item outlasts it. Guardian Angel is aimed squarely at the reset: the kill that would have given her the jump back (and with it a second entry into the same fight) simply doesn't happen.
