How to Beat Zoe

Matchup Guide · Evergreen · 3 Counter Picks

Zoe does nothing at all for two minutes and then removes somebody from the game in one motion.

She's the least forgiving champion on either side of the matchup. Her damage arrives as a single sequence that has to start from a long way away and land on somebody who isn't paying attention, and she has almost nothing else. Nothing sustained, nothing reliable, no way to fight somebody who's already next to her, and no second chance if the opening misses. That combination makes her feel unfair when it works and completely absent when it doesn't, and the matchup comes down to which of those two versions you're choosing to face. It really is a choice.

Zoe Overview

Strengths: What Makes Her Dangerous

  • The whole combo is one input away. If the opening lands she doesn't need anything else to go right, and there's no amount of health on a mid laner that reliably survives it.
  • She steals whatever your team dropped. Summoner spells and item actives she picks up off the ground give her tools she didn't build for, so her threat range changes without warning.
  • Her range is genuinely absurd. The damage grows with the distance it covered, so the safest place for her to stand is also the place where she does the most (a trade most champions don't get).
  • She punishes any group that stays put. A team waiting around an objective is a team standing in a fixed spot at long range, and that's the exact situation her kit was priced for.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • Every threat she has is a skillshot. There's nothing reliable in the kit. A player who moves unpredictably simply stops the champion from functioning.
  • She's helpless at close range. One short hop out and back is the entire defensive kit. Anybody who reaches her isn't being slowed down by anything.
  • The setup is slow and visible. Sleepy Trouble Bubble [E] travels, lands and then waits, and the version of it that comes out of a brush needs you not to be looking at the brush.
  • She's weak early and she stays weak while behind. She has no way to farm safely under pressure and no way to fight back if the lane is being pushed at her.
  • A missed opener costs her the fight. The cooldowns are long enough that the whole sequence is one attempt. Surviving it usually means the fight is now happening on your terms.

Countering Zoe

Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Zoe comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:

  • Bring something that eats one spell. Anything works (a shield, a wall, a wind wall). Her plan doesn't have a second half, so removing the first half removes the plan.
  • Close the distance rather than trading at range. Every meter you cover is damage taken off her opener, and the end of that walk is a place where she has no answer at all.
  • Move while you farm. Standing on a wave in a straight line from her is the single most common way this matchup is lost, and it's lost during a minute where nothing appeared to be happening.
  • Ward the brush she's aiming at. Most of her successful setups come from a spot you could have seen. The trap only works on somebody who didn't know it was there.

If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:

Playing a Bad Zoe Matchup

Assume the bubble is in the brush and walk around it rather than through it. The few seconds this costs are worth much more than the alternative, and after two or three of them she starts placing it somewhere worse.

Don't stand next to a wall while she's unaccounted for. The version of her opener that comes off a wall is the one that arrives from an angle nobody was watching.

When she uses the hop, that's the moment. It's her only way of covering distance (and it's now on a cooldown), so anybody with a gap closer has a window that won't come again for a while.

Best Zoe Counters

Delete one spell, arrive on top of her, or make the fight happen before her opener exists.

Yasuo champion icon

Yasuo Deletes The Opener

A wall in front of the person she's aiming at stops the sequence outright, and there's no part of her kit that goes around it.

He then does the other thing she has no answer for: he arrives. Once he's standing next to her, the hop is a delay rather than an escape.

Talon champion icon

Talon Arrives Over The Wall

He doesn't have to walk down the lane at her. He comes over terrain from a side she isn't covering, and there's no version of the matchup where she survives being reached.

He's also the correct answer to the way she plays the map, because the champion who does nothing for two minutes at a time is the champion who isn't there when he leaves.

Vi champion icon

Vi A Lockdown She Cannot Leave

Her ultimate doesn't miss and doesn't care about the hop (the only defensive tool Zoe owns).

The dash through minions matters as much. A mid laner who's used to being safe behind a wave finds out that the wave was never the obstacle it looked like.

Itemizing Against Zoe

This is a matchup decided by one burst, so the items are the ones that break a sequence rather than the ones that add up:

Verdant BarrierBanshee's VeilMercury's TreadsZhonya's Hourglass

Verdant Barrier is the early answer and it's worth buying before the fights that need it, because a spell shield against a champion whose plan is a single opening spell is a straight refusal. Banshee's Veil is the same idea finished, and it changes the lane rather than just improving it. Mercury's Treads is aimed at the sleep specifically, since the damage never lands on somebody who woke up early enough to move. Zhonya's Hourglass is the answer for whoever survives the opener with a sliver left, and it's the item that turns her one attempt into a fight her team now has to have without her best button.
