How to Beat Neeko

Matchup Guide · Evergreen · 3 Counter Picks

Neeko's best fights are the ones where nobody realizes she's involved until the stun has already landed.

She's a mage with an ultimate that ends team fights and a passive that lets her walk into position wearing somebody else's face. Those two things are the champion, and they support each other in an ugly way, because the disguise is what makes the leap land and the leap is what makes the disguise worth using. Neither half is hard to beat on its own. What beats both is attention, which is exactly the resource everybody is shortest of in the thirty seconds before a fight starts.

Neeko Overview

Strengths: What Makes Her Dangerous

  • She arrives in disguise. Walking into the middle of a team as one of your own is the setup for everything else she does, and somehow it works far more often than it should.
  • The ultimate is a fight ending button. Pop Blossom [R] catching two or three people is usually the fight, and there's no clean recovery from being stunned in a group.
  • The clone buys her real cooldowns. People spend crowd control, summoner spells and ultimates on a copy, and every one of those is worth more than the mana she paid for it.
  • Her root starts a chain. Everything she does afterward depends on it landing, and it lands from far enough away that the setup rarely looks like a threat.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • The disguise breaks the moment she acts. It's a walk-in tool and nothing more. She has to reveal herself before she can do anything (the alert player gets a beat of warning).
  • The leap has a wind up. It's visible and it's interruptible, and the whole fight turns on whether anybody had a button ready for it.
  • She's squishy and she has to be close. Her big moment requires standing in the middle of the people best equipped to punish her for it.
  • A control ward is a real counter. Vision and a moment's counting undoes the approach, so this is one of the few kits where a cheap item genuinely competes with a champion pick.
  • Without the ultimate she's ordinary. The lane is manageable and the poke is unremarkable. It's a champion with one enormous cooldown and a long wait between uses of it.

Countering Neeko

Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Neeko comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:

  • Count the enemy champions before you commit. The most boring habit here, and by far the most effective. Six of them on your screen means one of them is her.
  • Hold a stun or a knock up for the leap. Save it through the approach. Interrupting it wastes the cooldown the entire fight was built around.
  • Buy the control ward and place it on the flank. She's coming from a direction, and the direction is nearly always the one your team stopped watching.
  • Don't spend your escape on the clone. It looks like her and it isn't. A beat of patience saves the button that actually matters.

If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:

Playing a Bad Neeko Matchup

Play the lane at range and force her to show herself to farm. She gets very little from an even lane and everything from a fight she set up, so a boring lane is a losing one for her.

Watch what your allies are doing rather than what they look like. Behavior gives it away, not appearance: the ally walking the wrong way, standing slightly too far forward, or not attacking anything.

Group in a shape rather than a clump. Her ultimate rewards a team that walked into an objective standing on top of each other, and spreading out costs almost nothing.

Best Neeko Counters

Stop the leap, out range the setup, or simply not be targetable when it goes off.

Poppy champion icon

Poppy Stops The Leap

Denying the movement outright is the single cleanest answer to a champion whose fight-winning ability is a jump into a group.

She also punishes the approach. Neeko has to close the distance eventually, and closing distance is the thing Poppy is built to charge for.

Vel'Koz champion icon

Vel'Koz Out Ranges The Setup

He does his damage from a distance where the disguise has nothing to hide behind (she'd have to reveal herself to get anywhere near him).

The lane goes the same way. A mage who wins the farming phase from range takes the levels her one big moment is scaled off.

Fizz champion icon

Fizz Isn't There For It

Untargetable at the moment the stun lands is a complete answer, and he gets to choose when to press it rather than having to predict her.

Afterward the matchup flips. She's spent the cooldown, she's standing in the open, and he's an assassin looking at a mage with no escape.

Itemizing Against Neeko

Three items and one ward, and the ward is the one that does the most:

Control WardMercury's TreadsBanshee's VeilZhonya's Hourglass

A Control Ward is the best purchase against her and it costs less than anything else on this list, because the approach she needs runs through ground nobody is watching. Mercury's Treads is the boot to take (her damage matters much less than the seconds of stun attached to it). Banshee's Veil suits whoever she's most likely to open on and it blocks the root that the rest of her sequence hangs off (a better place to spend the block than on the ultimate itself). Zhonya's Hourglass is the reactive answer and it's specifically strong here because the fight she designed resolves in about two seconds, and being absent for those two seconds leaves her standing in the middle of your team with nothing left.
