How to Beat Taliyah

Matchup Guide · Evergreen · 3 Counter Picks

Taliyah doesn't really hit you. She moves you somewhere worse and lets the rest of the map do the work.

She's a control mage whose most important tools aren't damage at all. One of them picks a champion up and puts them somewhere they didn't want to be, and the other splits a fight in half with a wall she can drop across most of a lane. Both of those matter more than the poke everybody focuses on, and both of them are worth almost nothing if she isn't allowed to choose the ground first. She's also fragile, slow in a fight and completely without an escape (a surprising gap for a champion with that much map presence). The matchup lives in that gap.

What a Counter Needs
  • A dash or a blink that doesn't care about terrain

  • Vision, because the wall is only scary when it's a surprise

Taliyah Overview

Strengths: What Makes Her Dangerous

  • She decides where you are standing. Seismic Shove [W] is a relocation, and the thing that kills you is whatever was waiting at the other end of it.
  • Weaver's Wall [R] ends a retreat. It cuts a fight into two smaller fights and the smaller one is usually the one your team is losing.
  • She crosses the map faster than anybody. Her travel is close to free, so she appears in a lane that had no reason to expect her and is back on her wave before anyone reacts.
  • Her poke controls ground. The worked terrain means there are stretches of a lane that simply aren't available, and losing access to ground is losing the lane slowly.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • She has no escape at all. No dash, no blink, no way of leaving a fight that reached her. The champion who moves everybody else cannot move herself.
  • The push is the whole threat and it can be dodged. It has a delay and it's visible, and anybody who reads it takes both her setup and her escape plan away in one step.
  • Her damage depends on the ground she prepared. Fighting her on fresh terrain is fighting a much weaker champion, and the ground resets on a timer she doesn't control.
  • The wall can help you. It's a piece of terrain like any other. A badly placed one blocks her own team, and it's the kind of mistake that decides a game.
  • She is very weak to being arrived on. Once somebody is next to her the toolkit is a slow and a hope. She has no way of creating distance for herself.

Countering Taliyah

Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Taliyah comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:

  • Bring a dash or a blink. Terrain is her whole plan, and a champion who ignores terrain has removed most of it before the game started.
  • Watch the ground instead of her. The difference between fighting her on worked terrain and fresh terrain is enormous, and it's entirely visible before the fight begins.
  • Move sideways when she casts. The push (Seismic Shove [W]) has a delay on purpose. Reading it turns her opening into a wasted cooldown and leaves her standing in the open.
  • Don't chase through the wall. It's designed to make the chase into a trap. Walking around costs a few seconds and walking through costs the fight.

If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:

Playing a Bad Taliyah Matchup

Farm from a spot she hasn't prepared. If the ground behind you is worked, so is the trade, and stepping two waves back often fixes it.

Ward the side lanes when she goes missing. Her travel is fast enough that her being absent from mid is a warning about somewhere else, and it's a warning that arrives with several seconds of notice.

When she's used the push, that's the window. It's her only defensive tool as well as her setup, and a champion who has spent it has nothing to say to anybody walking at her.

Best Taliyah Counters

Ignore the terrain, reach her before the ground is ready, or make her spend the push on nothing.

Kassadin champion icon

Kassadin Terrain Is Not A Problem

He crosses the ground she prepared without touching it, and the wall that would trap anybody else simply isn't part of the interaction.

Granted, the lane is uncomfortable for him early, but she has no way of ending it and no way of surviving the part of the game where he starts arriving.

Katarina champion icon

Katarina Arrives Without Walking

She moves in steps rather than in a line, which takes the worked ground and the wall out of the fight at the same time.

And there's nothing waiting on the other side. A fragile mage with one displacement and no escape is the target the whole kit was built for.

Xin Zhao champion icon

Xin Zhao Does Not Stop

He closes the distance in one move and then keeps going, and the slow that is her answer to most junglers doesn't slow him down enough to matter.

The knock back at the end also solves the wall directly, because it moves everybody else out of the fight she was trying to cut in half.

Itemizing Against Taliyah

Her damage is magic and it arrives in pieces, so the buys are about surviving the setup rather than the poke:

Verdant BarrierKaenic RookernMercury's TreadsControl Ward

Verdant Barrier is the early answer (a spell shield eats the push), and the push is the piece that puts you somewhere the rest of her team is standing. Kaenic Rookern is the finished version of the same idea and it also covers the constant chip damage that makes her lane uncomfortable. Mercury's Treads is aimed at the stun and the slows rather than the damage, and it's the cheapest way of shortening the few seconds where everything actually happens. A Control Ward is on the list because her map travel is her best quality and it's only good when nobody saw it, and a lane that knows she's left is a lane that can't be caught by it.
