How to Beat Mordekaiser

Matchup Guide · Evergreen · 3 Counter Picks

Mordekaiser doesn't outplay you. He walks at you and survives everything you have. At level 6 he takes you somewhere nobody can help you.

There's a particular kind of misery in a Mordekaiser lane: you win the trade, and he heals it all back and keeps walking forward. Being dragged into a duel you didn't choose (and can't leave, or get help in) is a legitimately awful experience, and dreading it isn't an overreaction. His weaknesses are structural, though, and they haven't moved in years.

Mordekaiser Overview

Strengths: What Makes Him Dangerous

  • Realm of Death [R] drags you into a private dimension and steals 10% of your stats. If he kills you there, he keeps them until you respawn.
  • Every ability costs zero mana. You can't starve him out of the lane or punish him for spamming Obliterate [Q] to shove waves.
  • Indestructible [W] banks the damage he deals and takes into a shield, then converts it into a heal. Every trade you take feeds it.
  • Death's Grasp [E] is his main pre-6 trading tool: it pulls you into Obliterate [Q] range, and that combo is most of his early damage.
  • Darkness Rise [Passive] turns any extended fight into a losing one, since the aura keeps ticking while he chases you down.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • He has no dash and no blink. Death's Grasp [E] is a 700 range pull and that's the entire toolkit for closing a gap.
  • Realm of Death [R] is a duel with a timer. Survive the duration and he walks away with nothing at all.
  • His early cooldowns are long. Death's Grasp [E] sits at 16 seconds at rank 1 and his ultimate at 140 seconds.
  • His damage is almost entirely magic, so magic resist is a genuine stat check rather than a soft mitigation.
  • He has to walk to you. Anything that kites or disengages beats his engage pattern, and so does simply refusing to stand still.

Countering Mordekaiser

Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Mordekaiser comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:

  • Survive or invalidate his ultimate. Invulnerability, heavy sustain, or enough magic resist to run the clock all turn his ultimate into a wasted 140 second cooldown.
  • Never let Death's Grasp [E] land. Out-range or out-mobility him. Failing that, hold a disengage tool for the exact moment he steps up.
  • Stack magic resist early. He has no physical damage to punish a lopsided defensive build, so there's no cost to committing to it.
  • Punish the gaps in his cooldowns. His pre-6 trading pattern lives on Death's Grasp [E], and it's down for 16 seconds at rank 1.

If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:

Playing a Bad Mordekaiser Matchup

Hold your wave closer to your own tower. Mordekaiser wants a long lane so his Darkness Rise [Passive] move speed can walk you down with nowhere to run, and a short lane removes most of that pressure.

Bait Death's Grasp [E] before you commit to anything. Once the pull is on cooldown, you have a long window where his only way to reach you is walking in a straight line.

Save your escape for the moment he ultimates. You can't Flash out of it, so the value comes from being at full health and full cooldowns when the timer starts rather than trying to avoid it.

Track his ultimate. At rank 1 it's a 140 second cooldown. That's a very large window to take a plate or cross the map, or to fight a skirmish where he can't delete anyone.

Best Mordekaiser Counters

These three champions beat Mordekaiser in three different ways, so pick the one that fits how you already like to play rather than the one with the shiniest win rate.

Warwick champion icon

Warwick Out-sustains Him

Warwick is the single worst matchup on Mordekaiser's sheet, because his healing scales up exactly as the fight goes badly. Eternal Hunger [Passive] heals him on every attack below 50% health and triples that healing below 25% (precisely the health range where Mordekaiser's ultimate is supposed to close the deal).

Jaws of the Beast [Q] heals for a percentage of Mordekaiser's maximum health, so his own juggernaut build works against him. Primal Howl [E] gives Warwick flat damage reduction for 2.5 seconds (it blunts the Darkness Rise [Passive] aura and the Obliterate [Q] burst at the same time), and Infinite Duress [R] is a 1.5 second suppression that Mordekaiser has no way to break.

Tryndamere champion icon

Tryndamere Survives the Ultimate

Undying Rage [R] is the cleanest mechanical answer to Realm of Death [R] in the game. Mordekaiser's whole plan is to isolate someone and kill them inside a timer, and Tryndamere simply can't die while his ultimate is active. The 1v1 that wins Mordekaiser every other matchup ends with both champions walking out alive.

After that, Bloodlust [Q] heals the damage back. Tryndamere's attack damage also climbs as his health falls, so the longer the duel runs the more it favors him. Spinning Slash [E] also gives him a way out once the ultimate expires, which matters when Mordekaiser's team is waiting outside.

Singed champion icon

Singed Refuses the Fight

Singed beats Mordekaiser by never agreeing to the duel in the first place. Mordekaiser has no dash and no blink, so a champion built entirely around movement speed and disengagement is a structural problem for him rather than a matchup he can outplay.

Noxious Slipstream [Passive] gives Singed free speed every time he runs past a champion. Poison Trail [Q] damages Mordekaiser during the entire chase, and Mega Adhesive [W] slows and grounds him in place. Fling [E] then reverses the positions whenever Mordekaiser finally does step up. Proxy the wave and take the tower, then let him spend the game walking.

Itemizing Against Mordekaiser

Mordekaiser deals almost no physical damage, so a lopsided magic resist build has essentially no downside in this matchup. These four are the ones worth prioritizing:

Mercury's Treads Spirit Visage Force of Nature Banshee's Veil

Mercury's Treads and Force of Nature both blunt the chase, Spirit Visage pairs magic resist with healing amplification for anyone with sustain of their own, and Banshee's Veil eats a Death's Grasp [E] outright before the fight even starts.
