How to Beat Lux
Lux is a champion made entirely of things you're allowed to walk out of the way of, which is why losing to her feels so much worse than losing to anyone else.
She has one setup and one payoff (Light Binding [Q], then Final Spark [R]). Land the root, everything else follows, and the sequence is long enough that a player who reacts to the first part gets to skip the rest. Miss the root and she's a fragile champion with no dash, no blink and nothing to do for the next several seconds. There isn't really a middle version of the matchup, so it's very learnable.
- A way to survive one root, whether that's a shield, a spell shield or simply enough health
- The ability to reach her, because she has nothing whatsoever to stop somebody arriving
- Patience with a long-range lane, since the punish window opens on her cooldowns rather than on yours

Lux Overview
Strengths: What Makes Her Dangerous
- The combo is lethal from full health. A single connected sequence removes most of a squishy champion at almost any point in the game.
- She fights from outside your range. Everything she wants to do happens at a distance where a lot of champions genuinely can't respond.
- The finisher covers the whole lane. It ends people who thought they had escaped, and it comes back fast enough to be used as a farming tool.
- She shields, so she wins even trades. Poke exchanges she loses on paper come out level because she gets to erase part of what you land.
- Her root catches two people. It doesn't stop at the first target, which is why it lands so often on a lane trying to stand apart.
Weaknesses: Where You Get In
- Everything is a skill shot, including the one that matters. There's no version of her kit that lands automatically, so the matchup rewards movement more than it rewards items.
- Minions eat the root. Light Binding [Q] stops on the first thing it hits, and standing behind your own wave turns her opener into a wasted cooldown.
- She can't leave. No dash, no blink, no stealth. Whoever gets to her chooses how the fight ends.
- The cooldown gap is enormous early. Miss the root at level three and she has nothing to defend herself with for a very long time.
- She's squishy and she stays squishy. Her build makes her hit harder and does nothing for her health, so she never grows out of the problem.
Countering Lux
Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Lux comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:
- Stand behind the wave. This one habit removes most of her lane pressure and costs nothing.
- Move sideways for no reason. Predictable walking is the only thing that makes her skill shots reliable, and the player who never stops adjusting is the one she can't hit.
- Count her root. The moment it's gone she's a farming champion with no defensive tools, and that window is where the lane gets won.
- Get on top of her once. She has no answer for it, so anyone who can cross the gap wins the exchange outright rather than merely surviving it.
If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:
Playing a Bad Lux Matchup
Give up a few minions rather than a health bar. Farming under pressure at a third health is the exact situation her finisher exists for.
Push the wave and roam. She's slow and immobile, and she can't follow you anywhere, so the map is the part of the game where you're favored even when the lane isn't.
Bait the root deliberately. Step forward a bit, force it, step back. The five seconds afterward belong to you and they're the only ones that do.
Best Lux Counters
Three ways to beat a champion with one setup and no exit: out-range the setup, survive it, or be on top of her before she gets a second attempt. One counter each.

Talon Arrives And Ends It
She has nothing to stop him getting there and nothing to do about it once he has. A champion with no mobility against a champion who ignores terrain isn't a matchup so much as a schedule.
He also punishes the miss harder than anyone else on this list. One rooted cooldown is enough time for him to do all of his damage and be gone before her team can walk over.

Xerath Out-Ranges The Setup
Arcanopulse [Q] reaches 1450 units fully charged, further than Light Binding [Q], so Xerath can start every trade from a spot her root can't reach. Neither of them has a dash, so the one with more range sets the terms.
Shocking Orb [E] stuns for longer the further it travels, which rewards the long-distance game he's already playing.

Vladimir Outlasts The Poke
He heals off the wave faster than she can chip him down, and he can step out of the world for the second her finisher is in the air. Neither of those is flashy and both of them make the lane unwinnable for her.
Granted, he has to survive the first six levels, and that part is uncomfortable. Play it as a farming phase and the matchup inverts on its own.
Itemizing Against Lux
One of these is a component you shouldn't be in a hurry to finish, which is unusual advice and correct here:

Verdant Barrier gives you the spell shield early, and the spell shield is the item that answers her, so buying it and sitting on it beats rushing something with better numbers. Banshee's Veil (what Verdant Barrier builds into) is where it goes later. Mercury's Treads shortens the root itself (the setup half of her combo), which matters because the root is a timer on how much of the combo lands rather than a piece of damage. Zhonya's Hourglass is aimed at Final Spark [R], since a laser that takes a moment to fire is one you can be absent for.
