How to Beat Jhin

Matchup Guide · Evergreen · 3 Counter Picks

Jhin doesn't miss the fourth shot. He spends the whole lane arranging the moment where you can't be anywhere else when it goes off.

Most marksmen threaten you continuously. He threatens you on a rhythm, and between those beats he's a slow man with an empty gun. Learning where the beats fall is most of the matchup, because the difference between his best moment and his worst one is about a second and a half, and you decide which one you're standing in.

What a Counter Needs
  • Something to do with the seconds he spends reloading, because that's the only window he hands out for free
  • A way to cross the last stretch of ground without walking in a straight line toward him
  • Vision, or the patience to play like there's a trap in the brush, because there usually is

Jhin Overview

Strengths: What Makes Him Dangerous

  • The fourth shot is a different champion's damage. It crits, it grows off the health you've already lost, and it arrives from further away than the three that set it up.
  • He punishes chip damage twice. Anything that touches you opens a window where his long-range shot roots you, so his support poking you for a sliver is never just a sliver.
  • He fights across the screen. His finisher reaches lanes he isn't standing in, so a won fight somewhere else can still cost you the kill.
  • The ground is not neutral. Invisible traps sit in brush, in jungle entrances and around objectives, and the one that catches you is the one you forgot about ten minutes ago.
  • He scales without needing to do anything clever. Attack speed turns into damage on him, so items that look defensive on the rest of the roster still make him hit harder.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • He reloads. Four shots, then a pause with nothing in the chamber. Every good game against him is built on noticing that pause.
  • He can't leave. No dash, no blink, no stealth. Whatever gets on top of him stays on top of him.
  • His attack speed is fixed. He can't panic and out-click you in a close-range fight, so a duel that starts inside his gun is one he's already losing.
  • The root is a straight line. It's long, it's fast, and it goes exactly where he pointed it, which is the one thing about him you can genuinely sidestep.
  • His ultimate roots him in place. Once he's channeling it he's a stationary target, and everyone on the map knows where he is.

Countering Jhin

Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Jhin comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:

  • Count to four. Watch his shots and ignore his health bar. The fourth one leaves him with an empty gun and no way to argue with anything that walks at him.
  • Refuse the free damage. Deadly Flourish [W] only roots a target something has already touched, so the poke you shrugged off is the reason you're standing still five seconds later.
  • Buy vision and put it in the brush. A control ward in the brush he keeps walking to is worth more than one in the river.
  • Fight him up close. Every meter you close is damage he doesn't get, and he has nothing to reopen the gap with.

If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:

Playing a Bad Jhin Matchup

Stop walking in straight lines when you're low. The long shot is aimed at where you're going, and moving unpredictably for two seconds costs you nothing.

Take the wave and skip the trade. He wins the exchange he chose and loses the one he didn't, so farm on the beat where he's reloading and step back when the gun is full.

Treat every brush as occupied. Not walking through one is free; walking through the wrong one hands him a fight he didn't have to set up.

Best Jhin Counters

Three ways to beat a champion who needs a moment to set up: block the shot he aimed, arrive before the setup finishes, or take the fight in the seconds his gun is empty. One counter each.

Yasuo champion icon

Yasuo Blocks The Shot

Jhin's damage comes out of a gun, and his basic attacks and the rounds from his ultimate are all projectiles. Yasuo's wall destroys every one that hits it for four seconds, including the fourth shot the whole lane has been waiting on.

The ultimate is where it matters most. A wall in front of the cannon soaks up every round Jhin fires into it, and he only gets four.

Nautilus champion icon

Nautilus Arrives Before The Setup

One hook and the matchup is over. Jhin has no dash to spend, no stealth to disappear into and a fixed attack speed that can't save him at close range, so a support who closes the gap on command turns his entire kit into something he has to survive rather than something he gets to use.

Kai'Sa champion icon

Kai'Sa Takes The Empty Window

She picks when the fight happens, which against him decides the lane. Her jump exists to cover exactly the distance he can't retake, and she can hold it until the shots are gone rather than opening with it.

Granted, the lane before that isn't comfortable, and pretending otherwise gets people killed. Play it as a farming phase, keep your health high enough that the fourth shot isn't lethal, and cash in later when a single jump ends him.

Itemizing Against Jhin

He deals physical damage, most of it in one enormous hit, so the items that work are the ones that blunt a spike rather than the ones that shave a percentage off a long fight:

Plated SteelcapsRanduin's OmenGuardian AngelControl Ward

Plated Steelcaps and Randuin's Omen both target the same thing from different directions (the size of the shot rather than the number of them). Guardian Angel is the answer to a finisher aimed at whoever is lowest, because it takes the reward away from the shot he was saving. The Control Ward isn't a defensive item on paper and is one here, since most of his free kills start with ground you didn't check.
