Counter Guide
How to Beat Kayn
Kayn spends the first ten minutes deciding what kind of problem he is going to be, and your team spends them pretending that is not happening.
He is the only champion in the game whose counterplay has a deadline. Before he transforms he is beatable, gankable and genuinely weak in a straight duel. After he transforms he is one of two very good champions, and which one is partly decided by whose face he has been in for the last ten minutes. Almost every game people lose against him is lost in the stretch where he was still ordinary and nobody went to find him.
- Early jungle pressure, because the window closes on a timer
- Grievous Wounds for one of his two forms, and it is the form that eats teams
- A way to punish a flank that arrives through a wall rather than down a lane

Kayn Overview
Strengths: What Makes Him Dangerous
- Walls are not walls. The flank you covered was covered against people who use the entrance. He does not, and the second gank on the same lane arrives from the side you already checked.
- He picks the form that beats your team. The Darkin Scythe [Passive] is a choice, and he makes it after seeing your composition rather than before.
- One form outlasts everything. The healing version does not need to win the trade, only to survive it, and the health he takes back mid fight is the fight.
- The other form ends a fight before it starts. The assassin version reaches your back line from off screen and does not need the rest of his team to be there.
- His ultimate makes him untouchable at the worst moment. He spends the seconds you were going to use killing him somewhere you cannot reach, and comes out at full commitment.
Weaknesses: Where You Get In
- He is weak, and he is weak for a long time. The early jungle is where the counterplay lives. A team that invades and takes his camps is not being greedy, it is playing the matchup correctly.
- The wall walk is loud. It has a visible trail and a real duration. A ward on the wall rather than the entrance turns his signature move into a slow approach with no surprise.
- Grievous Wounds guts the healing form. The version that eats teams runs entirely on the health it takes back, and one component stops it being a problem.
- The ultimate has an exit and the exit is fixed. He is untargetable, not immortal, and the moment he reappears is a moment you have known about for the whole duration.
- He cannot pick a form twice. Whatever he committed to is what your team is fighting for the rest of the game, and it can be built against from the minute it happens.
Countering Kayn
Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Kayn comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:
- Contest his jungle in the first five minutes. This is not aggression, it is the counter. Slowing his transformation is the only thing on this list that removes the champion rather than managing him.
- Ward walls, not entrances. Every piece of vision spent on the mouth of a lane is spent on the one route he does not need.
- Buy Grievous Wounds the moment you know which form you are facing. You get told, clearly and unmissably, and most teams still finish the item three deaths later.
- Hold your longest lockdown for the exit, not the entrance. There is no reward for pressing a button while he is untargetable, and there is an enormous one for pressing it half a second after.
If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:
Playing a Bad Kayn Matchup
Group. He is at his best against one person walking alone in a side lane, and he is at his worst against a team that has already collected itself.
Give up the camps you cannot defend and keep the ones near your lanes, because the fight you decline in his jungle is a fight he was always going to win.
Take objectives immediately after his ultimate, since that is the one stretch where he is a melee champion standing in front of you rather than behind you.
Best Kayn Counters
Three ways to beat a champion whose real strength is a deadline: beat him before the deadline, refuse the dive when it lands, or punish him for landing in the middle of your team. One counter each.

Warwick Wins Before The Transformation
Kayn spends the early game farming toward his form, and Warwick makes that farming dangerous. He duels well from the first clear and heals off his hits once a fight gets close. He can also see a wounded Kayn from across the map.
That last part is what Kayn feels most. A jungler who walks away from a skirmish at half health has a trail leading straight to him.

Rammus Refuses The Dive
Both of Kayn's forms hit mostly with physical damage, and Rammus is built out of armor (he also hurts anyone who attacks him while he's curled up).
The taunt does the rest. Kayn comes out of his ultimate next to your carry, and a taunt makes him swing at Rammus instead.

Wukong Punishes The Landing
Kayn's late game is walking through a wall into the back of your team. Wukong's ultimate is a spinning knock-up he can cast twice, and a Kayn who arrives in the middle of four people is exactly what it wants to hit. Spin too early on the front line, though, and the Kayn waiting in the fog gets a free fight.
Itemizing Against Kayn
The first two are the matchup and the last two are ordinary insurance:

Executioner's Calling is the purchase that decides whether the healing form is a problem or a nuisance, and it wants to be bought before the third death rather than after. Zhonya's Hourglass is the answer to the other form, because the assassination has a duration and so does the item. Plated Steelcaps handles the basic attacks that carry the damage between his abilities. Control Ward is the cheapest thing on this list and the one that most often decides the game, since almost everything he does depends on arriving somewhere nobody was looking.
